Recieved a phone call from one of UC's founding fathers about a 55 with 76k he had just gone and looked at but decided to pass on because he didn't need another project. He said they wanted $500 for it. It was only about 5 miles away so I decided to go look at it. When I got to the house I thought there was no way there was a pig here. It was a pretty nice house and there was really no room outside for a rust old pig. A man met me at the door and the first words out of his mouth was "There is no way we are selling it for $500" I knew at this point we may have a problem. But told him to let me look at it and see what I thought. He went out and opened one door to the garage. This is what I saw.
My first impression was "Well that is a pig". So at least the trip was for nothing. I asked the guy what the story was behind it. He said it was his wifes fathers vehicle that he bought new back in 75. Said he drove it off and on until 85 when he got drunk one night and rand over all his neighbors mailboxes. After that it was put in the garage and left there for the next 20 years.
Her father had basically given her the cruiser with the intention of one day fixing it up for her son. I met her son who was about 14-15 years old. She said that it was just to far gone for them to do anything with and she wanted it out of the garage.
So now I'm still looking this 55 over with this guy and he is telling me how rare it is and other stuff I already knew. But I decided to just let him talk. About that time the lady I had talked to on the phone drives up. She gets out and her husband proceeds to tell her there is no way she is selling it for $500. She proceeeds to tell him she is and that she wants the spot for her new car she just bought. She looks at me and asks me if I want it. I say yes and tell her I'd give her $600 for it just to make her a little happy. She asked me if I was going to part it out or modify it. I told her my intentions were to keep it stock and use it as an around the town vehicle. "Sold" she says. I wrote a check and told her I'd be back tomorrow with a wrecker to pic it up.
I snapped a few pics of it while it was in the garage with all the crap piled on it.
When the wrecker showed up the guy said he had never seen something that looked like that. Said it was really cool. Since it had 4 flat tires he had to drag it out of the garage. It was kind of cool seeing it on the wrecker going down the road for the first time in 20 years.
Looks tiny compared to my 40.
