Hi guys,

I'm travelling with a german Landcruiser HZJ78 with 1HZ engine.

My problem beginns in elevation above 3000ft. Smoke comes out, no power, max. speed 35mi.

I'm looking for someone who is able to work on the fuel pump to give it new settings...

Travelling in this moment on US93 south in Idaho, next destination Nevada etc.

Can you help me?

Thanks

Willi from Germany

I suspect that you are near Twin Falls and are heading South to JackPot. I have dirven this route and can tell you that after you leave Twin Falls you will not find any town of size which will likely have a mechanic for your diesel LC until you hit Las Vegas. On top of that you have a mountain pass which is over 8,000' and most of the route - if not all - is over 3,000'. It's all high desert. You're best bet is to try to find someone in Twin Falls.

Does the HAC work or does it have one fitted

He really needs someone who knows these pumps.
Im guessing a Bosch fuel injection specialist is his best bet.

I just checked the Bosch USA web site: http://www.boschservice.com/ServiceLocations/DieselServiceCenter/Diesel+Service+Center.htm There is no certified bosch diesel service in Idaho. There is only one in Nevada:

J & S Diesel Service5155 S. Industrial RoadLas Vegas, NV 89118-1745Phone: (702) 736-8526Fax: (702) 736-0951Email: vegaspumpman@hotmail.comFactory Trained For : DM, CRSeal # 2913

There is one in Pendelton Oregon but that will be quite a bit of back-tracking for you along I 84:

PowerHouse Diesel Performance, LLC401 NE Hwy. 11Pendleton, OR 97801Phone: (541) 278-4022Fax: (541) 276-3424Email: powerhousediesel@hotmail.comWeb Addr: http://www.dieselpowerhouse.comFactory Trained For : DM, CR

I know that both Case and New Holland tractors used the Bosch pumps and there are probably more manufactures. Your best bet may be a tractor dealer which has a service center. I found this one in Twin Falls which is a dealership and service centre for New Holland:

Twin Falls Tractor & Implement
1935 Kimberly Road
Twin Falls, ID 83301
(208) 733-8687

Good luck.

I thought not all 1HZ have HAC ( at least here ) as same as TD42 .. but 35 mph over 3k in a flat road . ?

Hey Tapage. Yes, the HAC in the TD4.2 is only and aftermarket option AFAIK. As Crushers pointed out,:D it is a Turbo. But I have done a mountain pass here on numerous occasions at near 6,000' and no HAC. No smoke issues and still climbing decent grades at 60-70 kms/hr. My HAC is less foot on the sknny pedal and drop a gear. 35 m/ph tells me that he probably has problems beyond a HAC. I suspect his injectors need servicing. If anyone has messed with the pump and didn't set it with a gauge, then the timing could also be out. I know that mine is set for sea level at .75mm but I could back it off a bit for high alt to prevent some overfueling. But if the injectors do not have a good spray pattern, it won't do anything to improve it. When I first got the truck I had the same issue. It would go up hills at 60 kms/hr like a mobile tire dump fire. Now with new injectors, I go up those same hills at 100 kms/hr. Yes, the pump was rebuilt, but I do not think that was the problem. The pump was only done because it was p*ssing out diesel past the seals and I wasn't experienced enough to tell them to just do the seals. It only had 132,000 kms on the pump.

Willi, post again to let us know how you have made out. I am just assuming the smoke you are talking about is black smoke. If it is another colour, then you have other issues.

I don't dispute other folk's diagnostic, but check your air filter, if it's clogged and you have little air from altitude and you are under load, you'll have the problems you describe here.

If it's the standard round drum filter you can get one for 12.99 at Autozone (STP SA376), its a large american car parts chain, they usually have this filter in stock.

Are Bosch pumps similar to Aisin pumps?

Bosch has done well selling licenses on their IPs. The VE style pump also comes under Denso and Zexel. This is the pump which would be on that engine:

It looks just like the one on my Safari TD4.2. Like I said, similar fuel systems are found on tractor applications. So if you can't find a Bosch certified shop then your best bet is a tractor dealer which has equiptment using a similar fuel systm. In fact when I went searching for fittings, the Bosch certified shop here couldn't help me. After lots of searching, I found them at a tractor dealership and they weren't as expensive as having the dealer order them..

It was optional on the 1HZ and later it became standard to comply with clean air laws

@ canucksafari

I went to Twin Falls Tractor & Implement, but they couln't help me. I went to different places the guys sent me...
The result: Only a guy in Salt Lake City can work on it. So I left the US93 and I'm heading to Salt Lake City.

It's realy amazing for me to see this good working forum and the helpful guys. IN germany we have this as well under www.buschtaxi.de (see forum)

Thank you!!!

Willi

Good to hear from you Willi. I was waiting to hear news of a strange slow moving black cloud near the junction of US 93 and Nevada's Extraterrestrial highway (Route 375). LOL Hope the tractor boys will be able to help you out. Cheers, John
