Just got the MT tube fenders and doors installed. Very nice products. Hats off to the MT folks. Also installed a Man-A-Fre dual swing out tire and cooler carrier. Another very nice product.

nice. how was installing the doors? did you have a spare set of door side hinges sitting around, or use the ones off your doors? how are the strikers and paddle handle?

My one big concern on those doors is the open space and lack of at least 1 cross support seen on other styles.

anyway, sounds like you spent some $$$ on all these cool items as the MAF tire carrier ain't cheap either :) now, you just must add some sliders.

ps - next time, tell your tire guy to put his balancing weights inside the rim :)

Show me pics of the swing out.

Thanks.

I like the doors. They're very nice. Wondering if you could put skins over those doors to make them appear to be half doors? The tube doors are nice, but half doors make the curiser look classic...

there are so many production half doors out there to choose from, no reason to take a nice pair of rare tube doors - MT seems to now be the only company truly producing them to sell at the time of this post - and skin them.

I don't understand the want for have doors anyway.

simple...safety..... at least, that is my main goal. I love having open doors here in SoCal... but they are just such a liability. Tube doors are the best alternative to get the openness and free flowing air feel, but some protection.

Like wantatlc said, safety. First, they prevent your leg from getting bounced outside the vehicle in a roll. Second, they prevent rocks/stumps or whatever from hitting you in the arm/shoulder area in a roll.

I used the hinges from my hard doors. The latching mechanism on the doors would not work with my 78 striker plates. Luckily, I had striker plates from a set of aluminum half doors that worked. I'll post a pic in a bit. I have a set of the weld on MT sliders. I just haven't had time to install them. Yea, I noticed the weights on the outside too.

The striker plates were not in the packaging. Oddly enough, the caps for the tube doors arrived yesterday, several days after the doors, so maybe they also were shipped seperately. If they don't arrive in a few days I'll let you know, then you can ship some out.

Thanks,
John

Sometimes it gets a little nuts around here and I forget to put everything in with the order. Please let me know if you do or do not get them.

Maybe the first point it true for regular half doors, but the tube doors have a giant hole in the middle. If your leg can get past the rocker, it can get into that hole. Hokey argument IMO. A shoulder belt would be better protection. If you stay in the seat, your legs are going to stay under the dash.

I don't see how any half doors can protect your shoulder from stuff in a roll. It's your head you have to worry about anyway. Anyone wear a helmet when wheeling?

My reason for wanting half doors is they look good when done right, and they keep the heat in after dark.

Nice lookin' '78, btw.

In a Seinfeld Soup Nazi voice, "No tube doors for you". ;p

My one big concern on those doors is the open space and lack of at least 1 cross support seen on other styles.

The goal with a tube door is the open design. Adding a center brace would be purely for personal taste and not be a performance part of the door. The opening is too high to stick your leg through, (ok there will always be someone with size 7 feet that can do it) so that would not help and as built I can sit all 230 lbs of my self on them and swing back and forth. Yet at the same time the doors weigh in under 15lbs each with hardware.

When you are sitting in the driver’s seat the opening allows full visibility to your front tire. That is the #1 performance goal. #2 you can jump out of the truck and close the door with one hand, same for opening it. #3 They just look cool on the trucks.

We also have an aftermarket bolt on quick release hinge coming out as well, for those short on hinges. (Hinge design thanks to RJ Stout in Kentucky) You want the bolt on hinge since it plays a critical roll in door alignment. As much as we like to think our trucks are straight, 20-30 years of use or perhaps just the last two years of use tend to tweak the tubs. To make a door open and close with precision you need adjustability. With out adjustability you are back to one off custom made doors that may or may not work with more than one truck, and Metal-tech is not about to start making things that “might fit.”

78-FJ40: Great looking truck! Fenders look great!

Metal Tech doors

I have been doing some resto work to my friends 78. He is leaving the top off and bought some Metal Tech half doors to be installed.
I have been restoring FJ's for a long time and I have never installed a better product. They are ruggedly handsome, very sturdy and reasonably priced. I still don't know how to post pictures but go to there website and take a look. If any one is looking pm me and I will send a picture of installed doors. kbill45@cableone.net
