Probably a long shot but any chance it is valve train? When I first started up my 3fe after the headgasket change I had some loose valves that really made a pretty good racket. Maybe not that bad but something to check before you go pulling the engine.
My vehicle had the birf and drive flange stripped so the birf was just spinning inside the drive flange. Wouldn't move unless the center diff was locked, because all the power was being sent to the wheel with the stripped drive flange and birf.

I just got my 3fe running so I have no idea of longevity but the GPI radiator for a diesel fit reasonably well and is working. Again mine has only been running for the last week since a head gasket rebuild. It was $180 with some cheapo electric fans.
