Mine had custom upholstery when I bought it. I'm guessing it's over 20 years old now, since I know the last owner didn't do it and the owner before him likely didn't either.
It even has a matching, Italian, yellow steering wheel.
If you do go down the road of replacing the Clutch Master and Slave Cylinder and get stuck feel free to PM me.
I imagine I'm the least qualified person to give anyone mechanical advice of this forum, but that also means if I can figure it out, nearly anyone can.
I recently had similar clutch issues, though i was seeing a leak. I ended up replacing the Clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder.
I actually found somewhere along the way, someone used electric tape to "fix" the cable between the Clutch master and Slave cylinder.
Despite this, at the...
I'm embarrassed to say I haven't fixed it.
After this, I got distracted with some clutch problems and haven't gotten back around to the speedo.
It's probably a good time to revisit it.
I was driving the other day and my clutch dropped to the floor. I managed to get it home and after pressing the clutch in the garage, my garage floor was covered in brake fluid.
I ended up replacing the Clutch Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder, but the real problem was a bent spring.
I got...
Thank you!
I'll probably start a new thread for this one. A guy near me has a roll bar he took off his 78.
If I can figure out how to move the seats out, I'll buy it.
Appreciate the info.
Lol. I can barely pass guys on road bikes with my 40! But it was fun seeing 100 on the speedometer while little old ladies honked their horns to get past me.
Thanks, I've actually mastered the 3 on the tree shifting with a coffee in one hand. No spills on the 40 and only second degree burns on my lap.
I like the upholstery too. I'd like to get a roll bar in there soon, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my long jump seats and matching upholstery...
A few weeks ago on a cold October morning I took Frank to my parents house when the speedometer started making a winding noise and quickly rocking back and forth.
At one point the needle seemed to get locked in at 100MPH and the needle actually broke off.
Changing the speedo cable is a pretty...
Hello,
I haven't posted much on here, but I've certainly taken advantage of the vast information.
If, by the off chance, there is another newbie 40 owner less knowledgeable than me, I decided to share my experiences.
A quick back story on Frank.... Frank is a 1970 land cruiser that...
I'm new to this, but love the idea.
I could pick it up in New England. I could possibly retrieve the one in Eastern Canada, if someone could get it state side in Vermont or NH.
I'm not crazy about driving my 40 long distances during New England salty winters, but I'm always up for an adventure!
Awesome thread! Really cool to see all the work you've done in such a short time.
I'm your neighbor down 95 not to far over the Connecticut line. I bought my first 40 this summer. It's a 71 but the same finish and hard top as yours. It's been fun a project, but I have nowhere near your...
Hi all,
First post here. I impulsively bought a 71 FJ40 over the summer. I'm not really a car guy and I didn't know much about them, but after a test drive, I was hooked. Three on the tree, no power steering, it was great...
Anyway, I'm slowly planning on restoring it to the best of my...
