You may not need to replace the half moon unless it's damaged. Make sure you scrape all the old liquid gasket off the cover and the head and put new liquid gasket on in the places indicated (and on the half moon).

Didn't have anything to do with the glow plugs. Apparently on this model the glow plug light acts a check engine light and it ended up being a vacuum switching valve that wouldn't open. Replaced the valve and no more light on the cluster.
