We did the registration thru the treasurer in Clay county Clay County, South Dakota - Treasurer
This is the affadavit for not living in SD but wanting to register your car there...
No, they gave us the plates and stickers first and then Sacramento stopped it. I then got a South Dakota title. I swear if we would have gotten the SD title first, it wouldn't have been an issue. :-( I have hope that after a couple years our attempt will fall off the record and we can try again.
Yes you call them and they explain what they need. The forms are online. My husband was the one that physically did it, but she had to do a stencil rubbing of the vin number and send that in the mail the paperwork and check and they send title, registration, and plates. It’s registered at a San...

But I can't find out anything really about out-of-country cars...
Update on my '88 LJ70 diesel imported from Spain.
We are military and stationed in San Diego after coming back from 3 years in Spain and bringing our toy with us, it arrived a few months ago. We did the Vin verification at CHP, no problem. We went to the DMV a few times, no problem. They sent...
We just received our '88 LJ70 2.4TD from the shippers not too long ago and unfortunately we need a starter. I asked the Spanish mechanic to fix it just before we left, but apparently that was lost in translation and he only cleaned it, not replaced the parts. Anyway, can't cry over spilled milk...
This is the response I got from ARB about my 1988 LJ70 that is currently on a ship heading to CA. Oh boy.
