Quick follow up to this thread, and a thanks to OP for replacement instructions. My 97 80 series was giving me occasional but random symptoms of turning the key to nothing at all, no start, no clicks, no power, no noise, just nothing. And no timing or driving history was a culprit; short drive...

Yes I tried to drive it after the incident happened. It would work for a little, then maybe get too hot or deep into gears and then would slip out and nothing would happen, it wouldn’t drive or reverse. I’d shut it off let it cool down, then I could move again after that…but back to slipping...

Yeah I’m wondering how it happened too, maybe my foot was slightly on the brake or something and it shifted. But I was messing with a wire being dumb and it went. Toasted transmission sounds like worst case…anyone knows what that fix and replacement will run me these days ?

Was just cruising down the highway and accidentally knocked shifter into R. Car shut off and I pulled over. Turned back in and I got off the highway. I did a quick scan and PO750 Shift solenoid A and PO770 shift solenoid E. Gonna get it towed this weekend, but can anyone give me a heads up on...

Final update, problem solved! :) Who had fuel pump on their bingo card? That’s what it was, I finally got those back seats out, under the carpet and pulled the whole pump mechanism. I replaced the sock filter, and little rubber piece it sits in, the pump obviously new oem, and lastly the little...

Good news/bad news update. Got the smoke tester working, put the cone in the intake tube in front of the throttle and opened that throttle up and let it smoke away on the high setting....but found no real leaks (a little excess out of the EGR valve), but again nothing major anyway. So...

Plugs, wires, dist cover and rotor were done last spring … so should be good and new, all denso oem stuff too. I bruised my ribs as much as I could stand inspecting that wiring harness….no broken, melted, or cracked wires. Bad ground huh…know where the main culprits might be ?

@alia176 through the intake after the air filter and before the manifold …? I haven’t done it yet but was also reading about and saw an easy entry off the brake booster … thoughts on that or yes they sent me a large cone looking thing that should plug a spot around the intake.

Some of the Vac hoses look like theyre from 1997....so yes gonna pull and replace those. I have some 3.5 and 5.5 sized hose from my FJ60 project around, are those the 80 series sizes do you know? If not, nbd thats an easy find for me, got my giant FSM in the garage. Gonna run to auto parts...

Yes , but I have 2 more years of emissions testing in my state, then it’s exempt. Until then didn’t want to mess with throwing codes, etc. If thats not the case tho…what did you do? Block off plate onto manifold, and just left EGR pipe in place and capped it ?

Another update: Finally got under the hood tonight. I took the EGR valve and modulator off in order to take a peek at any issues... And you all were pretty spot on, pics below: You can see the EGR pipe in both pics and it was melting that harness wrap pretty good. The pipe was a little offset...

No VSC on my 80 series, so can’t help you there. And I’m still in the diagnosis phase…although I can visually see that my main harness is touching the EGR pipe, so leaning towards that issue as the @flintknapper photo above shows that is causing my throttle problem. I did get the fuel filter...

Point out the harness for me ? Somewhere behind 1,2,3 I’m guessing …
