Follow-up - The Full Story
So the head gasket failed, and upon inspection the cylinder head had some small cracks. Pretty standard repair ... no big deal.
I ordered a remanufactured head online from Heads Only and installed it. After a month it was running poorly, as per the the start of this...
OK so finally got around to doing a leakdown test which showed an issue with the exhaust valve on cylinder #2. We pulled the cylinder head off and, well, see for yourself:

Can you say the name of the shop? (PM is ok if you don't want to slam them publicly)
Also, to your original point, I have seen shops cover towing but it's very rare.
So to be clear, you still want the shoddy work, you just don't want to pay as much for it?
That's my way of saying get a new shop. ;) "Fool me once," and all that ...
So I talked to my Italian coworker and it turns out the dealer with the vehicle I am interested in is right next to the office. I had him translate some questions for me as they didn't reply to my inquiry that I sent in English.
