Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

It does now! Fourteen months later…just got it to start and hold idle for the first time yesterday.

Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

And a question. I dug into the wiper motor this week, and found ancient grease that was more like adhesive gum. I can fix that. But I also found that the brush assembly was in poor shape. One of the brush holders (mounts? I dunno...) is broken and missing a brush. I found a couple of threads...

Things have moved along some since last I posted. I can't explain in words how grateful I am for all the collected knowledge here. Quick update photo:

    Ambulance door question

Thanks. I figured. Weird choice. I’ve got some rust on the inside to deal with now.

    Ambulance door question

Hello, my friends! I opened up the guts of my ambulance doors for the first time today, removing hardware to strip the door down for abrasive blasting. Inside the driver side ambulance door, I found a bunch of decaying, disintegrating fiberglass insulation. I haven’t opened the passenger shell...

    City Racer to the rescue!

Good advice. I didn’t realize how big the can of worms I was about to open was when I bought the carb. The list of lessons learned on this project is - literally - 57 pages long, as I’ve been documenting each step I’ve taken. I’ve been trying to follow a “touch your project every day, no matter...

Thanks for the heads up! I hadn’t heard that before.

    City Racer to the rescue!

Hello, all! I bought a carburetor from City Racer LLC back in November, when I first picked up my 40 project. Between ordering and delivery, I quickly discovered that I had way more to fix than I first assumed, and my project scope went from a few fixes to a frame-off (much to my wife’s...

    Solution for stripped windshield screw

Thought I’d post my solution for a stripped windshield hinge screw. As far as I know, there’s no way to get at the back side of the screws in the windshield frame. I was nervous about trying to drill this one out, so I came up with this option to try first, figuring that if it didn’t work, I’d...

Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

@charliemeyer007, you couldn't be more right. Luckily, that's a mistake I've only made a dozen or so times. Much more disciplined as I age. @Coolerman, SPOT ON. This is my third FJ40. First one since having kids (so fourteen years!). I find that my daughters have trained me to be waaaay more...

Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

Things have…progressed a bit. A little bit of “scope creep.” Somehow I slid into a frame-off. Not a complete, every-bolt-original-every-part-OEM restoration, but a “do it right to last a long time so I don’t regret NOT doing when I had the chance” renewal. Engine bay is empty now. Aprons and...

    1976 FJ40 Igniter question

Hello! I'm new and in the middle of gathering all the missing parts (and there are a LOT) for my 03/1976 FJ40. After searching the forums, I'm uncertain whether I need an igniter. I bought it with no coil, no ballast resistor, and (apparently) no igniter. It *seems* like a critical part?

Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

So, I’m gathering that no one is really sure, but this might be the horn relay? I wonder if other car groups have as much willingness to help? Thanks for the quick replies. You guys are great!

Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

Next question. What is this? I can't find any markings. It's floating loose, but it looks to me like the bracket should bolt in close to where the coil should be (will be, when it finally gets here...)

Just picked up a 1976 FJ40 to bring back from the dead

Success! After dancing a victory dance like the shaved ape that I am, I'm here to report back. Two things that helped: This post, with the rubber jar opener trick: Remove Gear Shifter - How To Easily - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/remove-gear-shifter-how-to-easily.816215/ and This video...
