I'm wondering what max EGT's people are getting with their 1HD-T's (those who have pyro's, that is).

I'll back off the throttle once I hit 1250 with my intercooled and overfueled 1991 HDJ-81, and don't go above this level for uphill running. If I keep my foot down I can easily spike up to 1350-1400 for a few seconds when passing people uphill. This is measured pre-turbo (ie the pyro on the engine-side of the turbo).

I figure I *should* be ok with 1250 pre-turbo, since a figure of 1000 post-turbo is generally take as acceptable.

What are others measuring (please note whether pre- or post-turbo)? Any one else running overfueled with an intercooler?

I once peaked 750°C on my friends HDFT, stock fueling & intercooler, otherwise 400-600 seems to be the norm. That's pre-turbo BTW.

Even gunning it up hills? Seems a really low EGT. Most people run around 600 or so on the flat. Perhaps the FT's run cooler than the 1HD-T?

Have to admit with slight fueling and not turbo adjustment it seems a bit high, although I am no turbo specialist and the fueling factor could be enough to run it up.

If that were the case I would cut back the fuel unitl you get the desired numbers.

your thinking F he is saying C degrees.

Ah yes. Doh. Thanks!

My 1HZ/turbo runs at 350-400*C on the flats and 500-550*C on the hills and sometimes up to 600*C towing a trailer up hills. These figures are taken after the turbo. About 3" from the turbo in the dump pipe. The fuel has been wound up with a 3" mandrel bent exhaust and 12 psi boost.

I thought ( just wondering maybe ) 1400 ºF is too much in a diesel engine .. At those temps I was scary about melted pistons ..

Always when I reach 1250 in my non turbo 2H .. keep my feet out !

Hi newbie here -put pyro on mine month ago
could hit 700 C on flat pre turbo 15 psi boost
wound fuel back quarter of turn dropped boost to 13.5 psi
pyros better but still have to keep a good eye on it
Differently a bit slower off the mark

been doing some research on EGT's and it seems that pre turbo 1250F is the upper limit. Reason being the turbine blades start to glow at 1270F

Mmmh I've hit 1000°C+ (1830F) on a couple occasions for short periods of time and the turbo is still operating like it should, but I start worrying at 1300F indeed :D

I run 400f - 800f, I think one or two times towing 7k up a hill I may have hit 1000f - 1100f. That is on a 96 80HDL with 1HD-FT and intercooler (that is post turbo temp).

Cheers,

Michael

Hello Jonathan,

I ordered by pyro today. When everything gets here this weekend I will let you know what temps I hit. I am interested myself. I am going to give it a good test run.

It's going on pre turbo and I don't have an intercooler yet.

Just wondering if you have a boost guage, what your max boost is.

Cheers,
Nick

I have a boost gauge but it's not hooked up yet (slack I know). Apparently I'm running 12psi, I'll have to hook it up to found out for sure.

in your factory setup .. ? is more that I know is factory in 1HD-T .. ( supose to be max 9 PSI )

On my 1HD-FT I get between 9-10psi, and if I put it to the boards I get 14PSI.

Cheers,

Michael

14 PSI ..

Pure aluminum melts at 720C, 1330F.
Aluminum is the main component of your pistons.
Your pistons are going to become awefully mushy if they spend any amount of time at this temperature.

Hi,

Silly question....why do you mesure the EGT (whatever that may be...). Is it because you've installed an intercooler in the car?
