3" aluminized steel mandrel bent exhaust installed yesterday with an Aeroturbine 3030XL muffler. They routed over the frame and tucked the tip up under the bumper with a downward exit.

First impressions:
It's not as loud as my old 2.5" system with only a resonator. I also had a pretty big rust hole close to the turbo that made for very loud turbo whistle. I hear almost no turbo whistle now.

The truck does not seem to have quite the same throttle response now. Before, I could blip the throttle and have an instant response. Now there is a bit of lag.

Top end power is up. I have lots of passing power now.

Low end power feels diminished. Almost like more turbo lag.

There's less smoke in normal driving. It could be a result of my exhaust tip aiming almost down as opposed to straight out the back.

Without any other changes, boost levels are the same. EGTs - inconclusive until I can get on the highway.

Problem: Once the engine and exhaust warm up, there is some rattling between the new pipe and the frame. It's very noticeable on engine shutdown. I haven't pinpointed the location yet, but it's going to have to go back to the shop for an adjustment.

Question: which end is the inlet on this muffler? There was nothing in the box, and nothing on the muffler itself. Right now the "O" in AERO is at the front. Can anyone confirm this is correct?

The system was built custom by a local exhaust shop. They just take straight sections and mandrel bent sections and cut and weld them together. I ordered the muffler online.

Muffler: $120
Exhaust fabrication: $500

$620 is a steal.. Too bad there is no such price in Calgary. Something like that would cost at least $1000 here. Most auto repair shops here are overpriced and under-qualified..
Thanks for sharing the info..

What shop did the work? I need some new pipe work on my 81. $1200 was a price I go quoted from a shop in the Vancouver area.

I saw you on Bishop Grandin on Friday afternoon/evening, you must have already had the new exhaust at that point? I didn't pay much attention to what it sounded like or looked like, too busy wishing I still had mine, lol.

I don't get how a shop can do it for that cheap, even a shop rate of 90-100$ and hour did he use tin foil to put it together? lol

For 1200 here, Im sure I know what shop your talking about... you can get an inside the frame rail exhaust with an aeroturbine muffler all installed, he uses the aluminum-steel also... I am kind of wishing that I went inside rail... I change it one day lol

The shop told me that it actually cost quite a bit more, but they had already quoted me $500, so that's what I paid. It probably would have come out to more like $700. That's not including the muffler which I supplied myself.

Yes, new exhaust was on. It really doesn't sound that much different. It's definitely more quiet. But as I mentioned before, I had a sizeable rust hole in the pipe right near the engine, which produced cool turbo sounds (really loud whistle), and lots of pulse/ticking sounds. I now hear almost no turbo sounds (sob). My old system also made a really nice growl at low RPM acceleration. That's gone now too. There's also less drone at higher speeds.

As far as how it looks, the old system had a big SS "ricer" resonator at the back, with a 5" tip. It was all clearly visible as it hung down below the rear quarter panel/bumper. The new system is tucked up with the tip curved slightly down. You can't see it from the side, and you can just barely see it from the rear if you bend down. More stealth.

WOW I pick my 81 up today from m-tech. They are doing stainless 306 mandrel exhaust with a straight thru magnaflow all tig welded with new stainless turbo flange and flanged section under the truck just incase it needs to be removed for other repairs . I'm embarrassed to say what I am paying but I'm praying to god it is mint. They do have a mandrel bend machine in house so there should be only 7 welds I was told. We will see . Ill post pics later today so others can judge quality of work.

Magnaflow "straight thru" style ss muffler. Was hoping for a bit more growl and whistle to be honest :(

Ill get a pic of the outlet when the wife gets home from the gym.... But honestly she may not be going for a while after I coughed up for this system..... Brutally expensive. I ended up getting 3 calls from start to Finnish with " revised " estimates.... I ended up telling them enough was enough and try we're so far off there original estimate I was starting to regret my decision.
I'm hoping it proves to be a good system and I sure the hell hope its the last system I EVER have to put on for the cost.

That sucks about them calling 3 times but hopefully its worth it.

If I had a friend or I could tig weld I would go stainless but for the price to get a shop to do it I can prob go inside frame rail a few times.

how does it sound with the magnaflow?

As I said I was hoping for a little more throaty note than the beausford 3" system that came off, but no. Sounds similar with I think a bit less whistle from the turbo. I'm sure the wife appreciates it as well as the kids... But the little kid in me wants straight pipe lol

I totally miss the growl and whistle!! I'm already thinking of adding an exhaust cutout to bypass the muffler for normal driving. I'll use the muffler only when highway cruising. I thought the Aeroturbine would make better sounds.
