My bezel seems to be pewter along with what I can see of the original paint on the bumper. From the remnants of the stock seats I had grey of some kind...

Just bought a 1980 BJ44 from a local today, and going to go pick it up this weekend. Wish I could share some pictures but dont quite know how to(forum noob). Also need to get some knew tires, it had some 31x10.5's but im thinking on getting some 33's. What do ya guys think? Getting BFG A/T.

hi kraig, the L package is not mentioned in the Model name until 1982, when the LX package was introduced...

both standard as L package are named KCY.

I dont know where the K stands for, all models have the K in them..
I do remember that someone here on mud once posted an explanation of the version names..

Hi all,

K stands for 4speed on the floor. C for Ambulance doors.

Hi Manuel,

if you're getting 33" you probably need a mild lift (2,5") regular suspension kits wont work.. it needs to be put together from a 40/42 in front and a 45 in the rear with some leaves removed.

please do a search for questions like these or start a new thread.. I would like to keep the registry as clean as possible with preferably pics and Factory specs related content only.

Spotted on Vintage Offroad

Just cruizin' around the web and I saw this 44 on Vinatge Offroad:

FJ40, FJ45 & FJ55 Toyota Land Cruisers, Land Rovers and Unimogs Call 24/7 (313) 414-3540

I didn't see a VIN. They're claiming it's an '82, but it appears to still have the slow glow and a RH rad top hose.
Looks like factory air. The wipers with the 4-link set-up is definitely different than mine.
I'm assuming the PO ditched the JDM mirrors (If only he'd PM'd me, I'd have bought'em) and put on the aftermarkets.
I don't know if the hood's original I didn't notice any clips for the sound pad.
Looks like a nice rig.

For the money... run. Actually from what I have heard about the seller... run anyway. That guy is shady personified.

It has to be an early 1981 and not a 1982. '82 would have the different engine setup for sure. Mine has the four link wiper and I think those were 1981 and later. Also, every 1982 I have seen has always had the steel fender flares, and even with those poopy things they installed, the body looks uncut. Doors are not original as they never had the hardware for door mirrors.

Also, notice how the first picture has body stripes on the whole rig, then all of a sudden it's only on the hard top. This thing has been painted at least once and I'd guess a lot more. The seats are not original as they have white hardware like Folkert's white/red seats but the rears are grey. Sad.

The interesting thing is what is the decal on the driver's door jamb?

The first pic with full stripes looks like it was before the truck was imported - the front plate looks "non domestic". The photo is probably several years old. Subsequent photos show a California plate.

I looked at all the photos before the price. I guessed $12-$14K so I was surprised to see the ask...

Especially since this guy is know for shady deals and paint over rust scams.

I think you are talking about the tire pressure decal...
I'm into the process of making a reproduction... together with the 500Kg capacity load decal positioned under the diver side ambulance door.

will keep you updated!

schlaker just a clarification on the rear fender flares the stock flares are metal not plastic if you had plastic then you had after market flares.

I also have a 44 as alot of you guys know here on MUDD I have had mine for about 6 or 7 years now maybe 8 its hard to keep track I own too many Cruisers more than whats listed below.
I have not posted up my info yet ...just lying back and waiting till I get some rust clean up done as well as getting a new soft top made up for it , mine was a factory soft top version has all the mountings and the loops along with the 1/2 swing doors so I am 99% sure it was a factory soft top, it came over with an after market version top but I am going to the factory design top with as close to factory hoops.... I will be fabing myself I have the door post sections fabed up just have to work on measurements and bends once that is done it's off to the stitcher to do the top .

Question on semi-float vs full float rear ends:

I was under the impression that the 44s were supposed to have a FF rear, and thought my rear was possibly screwed up and replaced with a semi-float at some point during its previous life.
I'm currently on the hunt for a parking brake cable (which is proving rather difficult to track down) and Toyota DIY shows the cable for RHD 43/44/46 with different Part numbers for full float or semi float.

SO. I have a semi-float
What do you all have?
...and do you have a spare parking brake cable laying around? :)

44 had a semi and the 46 upgraded to the full float. Your rig has the right axles for the model. :-)

You might be able to use a USA 40's (81-83) cable if it can stretch. Not sure how much slack there was...

Looks like that's the direction its heading. I have been making inquiries all over the globe, and so far I've turned up nothing...
Oh well, I guess that's part of the challenge of owning a rare vehicle.

Here's mine. Thanks for the link, Red. 1980 BJ44,
VIN BJ44 001347. The firewall plate shows model K-BJ44V-KCY. According to toyodiy.com
she was manufactured in October of 1980. Here is Clifford (the big red dog) spewing in my driveway:confused:.
No A/C, no pwr steering, no turbo-yet. 2B with 24v RHD.
Good beige console with rear heat.
