I've a 44 and a 46 and they both came factory with semi float axles. The full floater is very rare here in Japan until the 70 series came out. The parking brake cable is NLA here too. I figure when the time comes I'm going to have a custom one made. There is no was a 40/42 series cable will fit.

@emoto Clifford looks great! My 80 bj44 is also a KCY the same color not nearly as pristine looking. Is that paint original? Where is the truck originally from?

GO MWB!

Pete

@peteinjp Hi Pete! Clifford was repainted and that purdy bright red paint is covering all sorts of bad bondo work. After I get her running well and drivable, I'll begin tackling the bodywork. I like the original red color, this red is a bit more "fire engine" red than original. This ride was imported from Japan as far as I've found out. It changed hands a couple times, so this is mostly from my online research. Took me about 30 minutes to fill up the tank to day. Have to figure that out now:hmm:.

Here's my recently purchased 1981 BJ-44 VIN BJ44 003745 manufactured in 05/81 according to toyodiy.com. I'll need to remember to check the panel on the firewall to get the official model number. Imported from Japan in 2014 from a single owner (so, I'm told) and not driven much until I bought it. Picked it up outside San Diego and drove it 1,000 miles home to Colorado. She did pretty well on the journey. Had some clutch issues near the end that wound up being air in the hydraulic line. Also started smoking quite a bit (black) as I increased altitude, but I've already got that more under control by changing the air filter and adjusting the fuel screw. Has the white vinyl with red/tan checked seats, factory A/C that still blows cold, and the console with rear heat. This is my first LC and I've not been a car repair guy in the past, so I'm learning. Next big step will be trying to pass Colorado diesel emissions...

It's not emissions exempt being that old?

@RedHeadedStepChild Nope, Colorado (really, just the counties around Denver) made the emissions standards retroactive. For gas engines, you can get an exemption once you pass once on an older vehicle, but not on diesels. It's an opacity test, so we'll see. You can get a waiver if you fail and spend a max of $750 to try to fix, so I at least have that to fall back on if necessary.

Wow. Good luck. In NC after 35 years there isn't even a safety inspection, let alone emissions.

Anyone have seatbelt solutions for the 44? I'm needing to put in some in the back (missing) and replace the fronts. I'm thinking of adding a roll bar and then mounting them there in the front. Any ideas (with pics if you have them) most appreciated! Clifford got her 3b H55 and is a great runner! No more smoke (mostly...) and nice and smooth with the OME kit.

Hey emoto! Looking good!!!
Most universal seatbelt kits for european/japansese cars (metric bolts) will fit for the front. You should have the mounts as they were factory Installed on all 44's.
See my old blog post for the ones I bought, ( New seat belts ) i think they look goos and stock enough (same color).
also have the original ones. but didnt want to reinstall them as this is a matter of security.

For the back, this is another story. From the factory, There were never seatbelt installed in the back of the 44. So no official safe points to attach the belts to. I wish it was different, as I would like to bring my 3 y/o son every now and then in the car.

Any good advice regarding installing rear safetybelts is appreciated!

Cheers!

I got hand brakes made for my BJ 46 from a place is Europe . They came out awesome and if you didn't have an OEM next to it you would never pick it. They took a while but it was worth the wait and they were not that expensive at around $50 euro

I have gotten a few parts from them now and had no issues.

Just because it is Friday and BJ46's are Cool !!!!
