Pains me to do this. Up for sale is 1998 FZJ79 hardtop, longer cab, pick up truck. I recently bought the truck while I was deployed to the middle east during the Epic Fury days to give me something to enjoy when I return. After 2 months back, I ran into issues with the CARB faction of the Colorado Emissions Office. Though EPA exempt, the lack of a catalytic converter is the issue. So I recommend the buyer live outside of the CARB restrictive counties/states. Power windows/locks, A/C and heat (both work great), 2d fuel tank works, though fuel gauge does not, full factory lockers, 4.5L EFI that will easily run 85mph on the highway. I'm sure I am missing something as I am crying over my keyboard.

List of improvements by me are short - brand new 235 85R 16 BFG AT KO3 (5), and a new ARB bull bar.
List of improvements by PO:
- great shape 235 85R 16 Toyo Open Country MT (5)
- power coated steel wheels
- OEM radiator w/hoses and shroud, Toyota coolant
- water pump, thermostat 82c, A/C tension pulley, new A/C belt, idler pulley, alternator, v-belts, power steering pump high pressure hose, power steering pump drive gear, Fresh Red head steering gear box, steering shaft, windshield washer tank, windshield washer fluid pump, air intake hose and baffle, ignition cables & cable holders, PVC valve, ventilation hoses, accelerator cable, and custom made tonneau cover from middle east.
- Complete power steering pump rebuilt with OEM seals
- new clutch, throw out bearing, flywheel, rotors and brake pads, and high power starter.
- Dobinson 2 inch lift in front, with Dobinson steering stabilizer, new OEM tie end rods.
- OEM electric winch with new winch line (removed for the ARB install)
- spare parts include driver's door shell, one non-winch front porch bumper, one winch front porch bumper, OEM winch, OEM fog lights, and two brand new rear light housings.

I am continuing to work various angles on the emissions front, but as my options narrow, I thought I would hedge my bets.

Out of general curiosity, if the only thing preventing you from getting through CARB is a catalytic converter, why not just throw a cat on?

@FJhammer. Great question. I thought it was that easy too just to throw a cat on it. The first shop said they weren't comfortable. The second shop said there needs to be an engine id number assigned so the right cat (or 2) can be installed. Any shop adding the wrong cat can be fined. So I'm waiting for Monday to call the state office on how to proceed.

Also, both shops mentioned distance from engine to get the right temperature, no o2 sensor, and neither guaranteed a passing emissions test.

Regarding the cat topic, there is plenty of room past the down pipe to install a cat at least on my 75. Is the vehicle titled in a US state already? If so, that should make this much easier. I had a similar issue in CT. We have to get a VIN verification performed prior to registration and the first place I went refused to do it cause the dummy there couldn’t wrap his head around the fact this VIN didn’t conform to the new standard. Took it to another shop and they did the VIN confirmation in 3 min. Moral of the story, can you try a different CARB office with a different person?

Although the 79 series was never sold here, the 1FZ was in the 80 series. Use the cats and the O2 sensor measurements from the 80.

The 1FZ coil pack engine was never offered in North American there for is not and cannot be CARB compliant no matter what you do.
This stuff is will documented it tech sector or Mud.
Not sure where the OP is getting his information but there’s no way to get this turck registered in a CARB state/ county.

Thanks for the clarification, I thought CARB was just a California topic. I didn’t realize this is a more overarching concept used in Colorado too.

Actually worse in Colorado some counties require testing every year. Calif. only test by annually.
To be clear (pun intended) smog checks are a necessary evil, our kids and grandchildren deserve clean air to breathe.

Most modern car/trucks are 52 state compliant based off CARB regulations weather or not your state/county has smog checks.

I have the same driveline in my 1995 FZ75 troopy. The emissions inspector in Fort Collins just needed to verify that it had any of the equipment it was born with (no cat). These are carbureted 1FZ engines therefore no computer to interface with an O2 sensor. I was able to get mine to pass emissions by welding in a $200 CARB compliant catalytic converter just after the front resonator. I live In Berthoud if you want to see it and talk.

The one here is fuel injected with coil packs
Not carbureted.

I strongly recommend anyone looking to purchase this truck run the VIN and confirm the build date. Would also request copies of all import documents.

I have the EPA form thinking I would need it for state emissions. It was already titled in MD, so I didn't bother to ask the previous owner for the other paperwork.

I'm open and transparent to anyone interested. I have nothing to hide or I would just register it in a different county to get past the emissions requirements.

This says 07/2000 for a build date. This would make sense since 79s didn't start until August 1999.

Is there a door sticker with a build date?

What about a frame number stamp (maybe in the front wheel well area)?

Personally an FZJ79 is extremely desirable. Solves so many of the issues with the 75. Wouldn't have expected one to come up for sale near me!
