Well since this seems to be the photo thread, I'll move my stuff here...

UCLC WSSR Run - the 30 hour Cruiser-A-Thon…

Hope this isn’t too long winded for people, I always enjoy a good trail story – I hope you do too. If not – just use the pictures to tell the story!

It all started Friday at noon (well, actually it started long before that, but we’ll skip that stuff) I punched out at the time clock and waited for the moosecruiser to pull up to the back door of the shop for last minute emergency skid plate weld-on-age. Using a bottle jack and a few chunks of wood we got the skid pan in place for long enough for me to apply some steel bubblegum – done, sorted – hope it stays attached for the weekend because we’re out of here!!

4828_1159710479836_1440003436_30433236_7836569_n.jpg

Well, almost. Mike had to stop off to sign some paperwork first, then home for a shower because he was covered in rust dust from cleaning up the skid plate. – So I decided to head to Napa to see if they happened on the off chance to have some spare belts – just to be a little more prepared. No dice on the belts – I decided to head off ahead of Mike and meet him at the Flying J on the 401 in Napanee. I’d top off the “just incase juice” while I waited for him to arrive. (that’s diesel for you non-veggie folks).

So, around 2:00 Mike pulls in, fuels up and we’re off – Bombing down the 401 to meet Nicholas and the Rig of Mortis at Princess Auto in Oshawa. We arrived around 4 ish and decided to go in and see what stuff we could find that we really didn’t need, but would buy anyway. Shortly thereafter Nick arrived, phoning me from in the store since we easily could have walked by each other without knowing – seeing as none of us had met before! “I’m walkin’ along with my hand in the air” “Ok, I see you…” With each of us purchasing items, then out to the truck to check each others rigs out… by the time we pulled out it was after Five. (so much for arriving for dinner at this point!) We started heading up HWY 12, stopping off shortly for a sack of oranges (apparently the ROM likes to eat oranges). Since we were stopped we grabbed some subs from the subway by “Palm beach Megatan” – eating off the hood of the cruisers in the middle of the parking lot… for obvious reasons…. Right then, down to business – off we go – we can still make good time… Oh.. lets stop at Canadian Tire. So, Mike has some Radios now, and Nicholas has batteries for his radio. Mike has glass cleaner and paper towels…. We can see out the windows now (unlike later in the weekend!). Now that we all have radios that work on the same frequency, we can make some progress…

4828_1159710519837_1440003436_30433237_6343428_n.jpg

sweet. Off we head in some random direction – evenually joining back up with HWY12. Sweet – on the way!! Oh – what about stopping at Giant Tiger – Nicholas wants to get some rubber boots. OK, found a Giant tiger, they close at 9 (in 7 minutes) – we bomb in as they start turning out the lights. Grabbing what we can Mike finds a “My wife says I’m happy” can holder (which he promptly sharpied to “My X Wife says I’m happy”). I grab a bug jacket (or so I think) and a few chocolate bars, Nicholas grabs a bug jacket, but no boots – apparently there is a Wal-mart in the next town that’s open until 10. –Off we go again!

Somewhere along the way we found another Canadian Tire – not open, but it had a Rig of Mortis sized Chair out front…

4828_1159710559838_1440003436_30433238_6075998_n.jpg

Right then, Wal-mart it is…. Where’s wal mart? Following some idiot with a GPS (in a blue cruiser) we trashed around a few neighbourhoods, then took off down the right road in the wrong direction… Eventually Nicholas brought us to our senses and we turned in the right direction and viola (or violin)… found a Wally world – WITH BOOTS. Yippe! Still all carrying our FRS radios around with us, Nicholas asked Mike if he was still at the checkout – unwittingly answering “Yes” Mike unleashed the high point of humor for the day. This opened the door waaaay too wide for Nicholas, who exclaimed over the radio, broadcasting to all near the checkouts… “OK, I’m just going to the truck to rub one out” Then the long silence as Mike and I had un-controllable laughter…..

SO – Now we are really on the way, and it’s good because we’ve still got quite a way to go, and it’s now 10 – the Walmart is closing. One last stop at a Timmies, where I had the sense to turn OFF my radio before walking inside…. (if only they had known). On the road for good now – Arriving at camp around 11:30PM. Talked for a bit then set up the truck and went to sleep.

WEEEEEEEELIN!!

Right then, this is what we all want to hear about right!!

We set off to the trail head on Saturday morning all pumped and ready to go. Quite an impressive line up of trucks – with a 70 leading the way for 5 60’s and a sweet BJ80.. (Yes, you read that right) First hole on the trail is still beside the highway, so we all do a good job of messing it right up and getting stuck. Well, maybe not all of us, but most of us!)

At this point I have more pictures than words – so I’ll let them speak for a while…

And then we saw something I have never witnessed before. A Wayne hole so big, that even Mike would not attempt to Moose it though… (though he did dip in up to his knee himself!) After an unfortunate decision that we had no way over, around or through it, we decided to turn back and run the trail back out. – Again, I’ll let the pictures speak – they are much better than I am…

Back at the cabin, we sat and relaxed for a while, cooked up a few burgers, dogs, sausages, and some steaks. Plenty of stories, and wisdom shared. With the Moose in a deep sleep – we headed out in a reduced capacity of only 4 trucks, the 70 and three 60’s. Off to a different trail this time. We figured we had a few hours of light – so we would see how far we could get… I dub this – the MOSQUITO TRAIL – HO-LEE-CRAP!!

I was the second truck in line this time, following the tractor, with the idea in my mind that the more trucks went through, the deeper the holes would get. Being that I had the least prepared of any of them (lifted with 33’s but not locked, or tractor tired, or SOA with 37’s!) I figured it would give me the best chance. The first hole we came to got Wayne stuck – yes – WAYNE STUCK –

4828_1160249093301_1440003436_30435283_1660121_n.jpg

This should have been an indication that this was going to be a tough trail. When the tractor gets stuck, it’s not a good sign. Though quickly he self recovered and it was my turn. Very Carefully I chose the wussie line and got all the way through… Phew! Nicholas didn’t find enough challenge in the hole the first time, so backed up and got completely smothered in muck, and also stuck. Here a tug, there a tug.

4828_1160252893396_1440003436_30435286_5724646_n.jpg

Next big hole, and it was a looong one. Wayne goes through, calls me on the radio and says – “you’ll need to give it on this one – it gets deep at the end – put your tow strap on now so you don’t have to get wet putting it on down here” Word from the wise…. On goes my tuggum, over the hood, up on the roof. My brilliant brain says “open the door, hang the strap in so it doesn’t fall in the water” Brilliant brain realized a few minutes later, that this then requires opening of said door, while it is under water, in order to remove tug strap…. (lesson learned)

Tugged up out of the hole we prep for the Rig of Mortis to pass through – however, there is not much room for him to pull up. Says Wayne to Jeremy… “Just drive it through the next hole”….

4828_1160256013474_1440003436_30435296_4529403_n.jpg

“Why did you stop?” “Well – Drive it out!” - so he did! THAT was a DEEP hole with something very hard in the bottom!

I tried to sneak around the side and soon found what a steep side angle is!! (Wayne did his best to scare me by wiggling my truck by grabbing the roof and saying “does it feel like you’re gonna go over???”)

4828_1160252933397_1440003436_30435287_7708710_n.jpg

Next up were a few puddles, then we got into the "challenging" section

4828_1160252973398_1440003436_30435288_6220123_n.jpg

Trying to take videos and pictures on this trail was hellish on the hands – at one point I counted 7 mosquitos on my right hand while I was trying to video Wayne crawling over a massive rock….

I decided to abandon my truck for fear of it not making the drive home – the terrain got a little beyond my comfort level. After watching Wayne weave the 70 though what I thought was impossible, Nicholas did the same in the Rig of Mortis

4828_1160253013399_1440003436_30435289_1378228_n.jpg

– followed shortly thereafter by Matt in his JDM locked beast.

4828_1160253093401_1440003436_30435291_7072906_n.jpg

I still decided that I was better off with my truck on the easy side of the rocks, as we still had to come back out this way later on. Luckily for me, later was quite a bit sooner, as we rounded the next corner and came uppon a rock & tree field that the 70 could barely navigate, let alone a 60. Abort, abort, back the other way. At this point we started loosing light anyway so It was a good time to start heading back. (though Wayne had hoped for a 2 AM return to camp!).

Turning around of course meant one thing… going through all the MASSIVE holes, that we had made even bigger on the way in.

As I watch the hole ahead of me, I see nothing but mud flying and the sound of a 3B sounding much like it must as it screams it’s last breaths of air, I mean RUGGED. Matt going through the “just drive through that hole” hole. Out the other side and in goes Nicholas.. Good god – where did the Rig of Mortise go? DAMN that thing is deep now!!! Some good trail carnage as the drivers side shock did a 90° bend and gave up it’s previous life as a pogo stick emulator. (but didn’t break!)

4828_1160256093476_1440003436_30435298_2682557_n.jpg

Here I got to witness my first combination, Waynehole / Moosing it / triple sow cow. HOLY CRAPPERS – that’s a Youtube keeper… (this was the hole that he told Jeromy to “just drive through that next hole” on the way in

Right, Now we are back to the hole where I learned about water levels and doors. Matt drops the JDM cruiser in and “Mooses it” Rarely does one see Matt “Moose it” but he does seem to be picking up on it’s use… Only making it about 15 feet, he starts to back up when his swing out with the tire on it does a 180 off to the side… WHOA WOAH WOAH!!! He stops at the perfect spot, where I just stand at the start of the hole and latch it back up again… A couple more back and fourths and the locked RHD JDM is out of the hole. Right then, time for me to get stuck. “Matt, you want to just hold my tug strap, cuz I’m only going to get about 10’ in I think” “Sure no problem” I drop in the hole in 4Lo 2n’d MOOSING it through the floor, get about 10’ and it starts to bog. Matt is doing his damndest running along ahead of me with the strap, but before I lost all momentum I whipped out of 2nd and back down to 1st… up at about 3800 RPM that lil old 3B was just SCREAMING and I WAS STILL MOVING!!! Running along Tugging me BY HAND Matt somehow managed to get me through the WHOLE THING!! THAT for me was the most amazing part of the whole day/weekend/career/cruiser ownership. I still don’t know how it happened – Matt must have eaten his wheaties good that morning!!!

Back to the trail head and into camp, Chat for a bit then off to bed. Up in the morning for more great stories, then fixing trucks and heading home. Wayne was off first, loaded up and rolling home – hopefully he doesn’t loose a wheel on the way home this time. We all rolled out by noon, with four 60’s headed west on 518, and two headed East.

4828_1160256133477_1440003436_30435299_8185112_n.jpg

Mike and I decided it would be a good idea to stop off and get SOME of the mud off the trucks, earlier than later… he was having some vibration issues with the front end. We stopped off in some little down and found a pressure wash…. Lookee what I found when I started washing under there…

4828_1160256173478_1440003436_30435300_2686346_n.jpg

GOOD GOD!! HOW the fawk, in the name of the cruiser gods did I manage to do that!! (and not notice!!) ONE BOLT LEFT – and it was FINGER LOOSE!!. I was under there in the morning and didn’t notice a thing!! Well – no harm done but that would NOT have been nice if it dropped off at 100kph!! Trucks washed (a bit) and running a little better (no more speed wobbles) we finish off HWY 11, then #12, and onto the 401. At this point Mike unleashed his secret weapon (don’t ask what it is but I think he has one of Waynes Propane systems in there) He flipped the “throttle on” switch, lit the afterburners and was gone. I was pegged, but at 125 with muddy unbalanced tires, he was still pulling away. I gave up and decided not to end my life this late in the weekend… I relaxed back down to a more comfortable speed and eventually the Moose Juice must have run out as he slowed down and I caught back up. 6:15 pm, I rolled back into the driveway – 908km later still with the same full tank of diesel, 230 photos/videos, and more memories than I can count or type… I’m home. La Tortuga Azul has some new scrapes on the shell, and needs a vaccation – a new exhaust, some driveshaft bolts (!!!!) and a forced air induction system to aid with old age breathing. I think it’s time for little brother (the 40) to come out of retirement for a few weeks, while some TLC is performed on my TLC. Camera JUST finished downloading all the pictures so now I can wrap this up and start posting. (videos will take a little longer, I have 26 clips to sort through…!!)

Thanks for the great weekend everyone – and special thanks to Jeromy for providing the location…. And everyone else for the entertainment & enjoyment. This will not be a trip I will soon forget.

Working on the videos - they take a bit of editing before posting - but trust me, they'll be worth the wait...

Until I catch up with my two friends who were riding as passengers with me and download all of their photos and videos, this video I shot with my camera will have to suffice.

This is Wayne lurking through the last hole prior to our U-turn at the end of the trail on the second outing for Saturday.
