Monache meadows sept 18-20

guys, we're planning a little camping trip to Monache Meadows. If you're interested, please let me know.

This is a beautiful camping spot in the southern sierras, Kern river runs through the meadow, quite easy to get to. there is the Sherman Jeep trail nearby which we'll most likely do.

Kemasa will be co-leading.

let me know

Dana

OK, we have a date! We have picked the dates of Sept 18-20.
I'm driving up mid morning Friday. If you can't make it friday, we can
meet you at the ranger station on Saturday morning.

The area is beautiful, so if you'd like to come up, please contact me.

I've got some soul searching to do today Dana. Supposed to be going on a scout canoe trip the same weekend...but, there's one 'scout' and I do put scout in ' ' because this kid is a holy jackass that I'd be willing to do time in the big house to rid this earth of the little brat. He's the reason I'm leaving scouting as an adult leader. I was stepping aside little by little anyway and this kid is just making it quicker. Unfortunately, he signed up for the canoe trip last night and I'd promised myself I would not attend any further outings if he was present. Given that canoeing 17 miles is work, especially with head winds, I was hoping the sniveling little jerk wouldn't want to 'work' and probably won't anyway on the trip. I feel sorry for his canoe buddies having to carry this asshat of an excuse for a kid.

If I don't go on the canoe trip, I may just get out of dodge anyway.

Details on the trip? Where is Monache Meadows anyway?

Edit - little google earth - you approach this from the 395?

Hey Brent.

Monache is in the southern end of the sierra nevada range. I drive to it from the 14 hwy, a little past Ridgecrest there is a place called Pearsonville. About 2 miles past there, is a left turn, you go up that road (9 mile road) about 25 miles or so, then turn left and go a few more miles to the blackrock ranger station. From there it's a few more miles into the meadows. Chimney Peak and Kennedy Meadows are some other spots in the area.

You can also approach the area from the Lake Isabella side of things, but that's a much longer drive.

Monache is the largest meadowland in the sierras, and the Kern River runs right through it. We try to get one particular spot that's right next to the river, but if that one's taken there are others that are also excellent.

This is going to be a relaxing weekend, we will probably do the Sherman Jeep trail which is the only offroad option in the area. It's not a difficult trail, not really a challenge for a landcruiser, but I've seen a couple jeeps need a tug through one spot. It's more of a relaxing camping trip than a die-hard wheeling trip.

If you can get away, come along, you'll enjoy the place.

Awesome - thanks Dana. Still pondering, praying, soul searching regarding the canoe trip. I'm the adult in the situation and should take the high road with this kid, but...

I've been canoeing since my days as a kid in scouting and just love it, I just don't want to ruin an otherwise enjoyable weekend and 500 miles of my gas money to have a miserable weekend because of this kid.

I'll let you know. Monache sounds like a beautiful, peaceful place.

that sounds neat. Tempted.

Be sure to stop into Indianwells Brewery on your way up or back! The brewmaster and owner Rick is my good friends dad.

Wow, that looks cool. I had no idea there was a brewery there. thanks for the tip, I'll definitely check it out.

It's a good time of year because the Octoberfest beer is SOOOO GOOOD. And if you like the strong stuff, Lobotomy Bock will give you a good kick in the pants. He also makes soda if you're not a drinker. And all of the beers and sodas are form a live running spring just up the hill behind the brewery.

Great trip Dana. Arrived home safely about 7 this evening. Had a blast on the hour + wheeling just to get in and out of camp! The Sherman Heep Trail was super! Too bad what you remembered had been mostly destroyed by fire! Lunch on top of Sherman Peak was spectacular! Hope everyone made it home safely!!

Pic one entering the Meadows. Pic 2 lunch on Sherman Peak view!

Didn't take that many and none of the actual trail we did Saturday outside the initial trailhead. Shame on me! I should just upload to the cox photo site and provide a linky. Doh!

Hey, this was a great trip. the Sherman Jeep trail has changed a bit, the area is now burned out and the trail going up is a lot dustier than it was before the fire. Also, the forest road at the top has eroded in many places, exposing more rocks. This wasn't an issue at all for the cruisers, but we did have one stock LWB fullsize Chebby, and that had to be spotted through most of these "obstacles", so running the jeep trail took most of the day.

The meadows were as beautiful as ever, the stream was flowing nicely, and the air was cool and crisp. The whole experience up there is relaxing.

The group was big enough to have some good conversation around the campfire, but small enough to be manageable. We had 6 vehicles in camp, 4 went on the jeep run.

Thanks to all who came, it was fun. I wanna go back up there already!

Nice pics Ken. Agree with all your comments about the group and the two wonderful campfires we had. Great group of people to have shared a wonderfully relaxing weekend. I can't tell you the last time I came home from that much wheeling so totally relaxed and happy!

I'm jealous as hell of Eric still up there enjoying the peace and quiet by himself!

This is a bit hard, but Dana and I were planning on doing this trip again this year, so I was thinking of keeping the date close to the same, but it turns out that conflicts with Dana's birthday, which is the date for a tree dedication. This trip was planned the day before Dana passed away. He had also wanted to explore the southern part of Death Valley.

So, would Sept 24-25 work for people?

The plan is to go to Monache Meadows and explore the area. We did not plan on doing the Sherman Jeep trail again, but people can do that if they want to, just not as part of the trip. Just be sure to bring enough fuel. It is possible to do a hike as well. The main thing is to explore the area and remember Dana.

There is a second thread with this topic.
