I reached out to the forum member who used to sell a bracket to retrofit the Tubdra alternator to 3fe. He's no longer offering said bracket.

Does anyone have a schematic, rendering, or know the measurements of such a bracket?

Since my motor is out, I plan on having one made so I can go with the beefy Tundra alternator. Should fit nicely where my smog pump went.

If you know if something that works please let me know:

TY, Cullen

Anyone??

Interesting. I didn't even know this was an option. I ended up using the 90A upgrade on mine. Please post some pictures once you get it all finished up.

Recently there have been posts about alternators. Within those thread CruiseOrlando posted a link to the 150amp Alt upgrade. check out this link

That's a 1FZ..... he's talking about a bracket for a 3FE in a 91-92 rig.

I also had never heard anyone was making a bracket for this or I would have ordered one a long time ago.

OP can you provide links to the threads it was in??

Here's one of the threads that I was reading, there were 4 or 5 on the subject. Apparently I erred a bit, the bracket in question was made by a member by the name of "Photoman" and was actually for the 1FZ series motors, not 3fe. You see what late night forum scourging does to the mind?

I believe it has been done though and look to recreat the original design.

Care to join me on this lonely road?

I'm at the office now, I'm sure I can find more info & threads this evening...

Cullen,

Thanks for your interest in our product.

For your 1992 Landcruiser 4.0:

Starcharge # 13562-160A is 160 amp version of the stock 90 amp alternator that installs without any modifications or rewire. It fulfills your charging requirements requested via email.

Unfortunately, cores are not available to us at this time, but your original alternator may be sent to us for conversion to 160A, reusing only the frame housings. All new component electronics. You pay shipping to us, we pay for return shipping to you. 48 hr or less turnaround time.

Cost $249.00

This guy responds quickly & seems very knowledgeable. I'm sending my alternator to them for sure.

What else needs to be replaced??

If they are truly only reusing the case, then I would assume there's new bearings, brushes, ETC. Best to verify with them.

I have my original alternator sitting on a shelf. I might reach out to these folks AFTER I follow your thread for a while ;)
My alternator cable and fusible links have all been changed out so this should just be a drop in for me, assuming they can do the same with an 80 amp OEM Denso from a 1991.

just wanted to clarify from what I learned in my quest for more amps alternator through rebuilding stock Toyota 3FE Land Cruiser alternators- only 90 amp alternators are capable of upgrading- the 80 amp isnt so easy and most alternator shops dont even want to touch the 3FE 80amp alternator...

Boyles Technology charged me 185.00 to upgrade my 90 Amp to 160Amp plus shipping... Its been so long ago- I forgot what they charged me - so I called them today to verify the cost- it was 185.00 July 2011 and still 185.00 November 2013... you just have to send them your alternator to rebuild it.

Oh, and the 90Amp alternator requires a different mount bracket- be sure to source it with the mount bracket- or you can modify your current bracket with some grinding to make it fit- I chose to go with the stock 90Amp alternator bracket that Toyota produced. My 80Amp stock bracket is collecting dust in a shop drawer along with the 80Amp alternator that came out - just in case I decide to sell the ride (which would require hell to freeze over) and want to retain my upgraded alternator for another landcruiser project- always wanted to build a stroker 3fe fj40 when my kids are grown and gone (which I also believe will be a cold day in hell- as they are already grown- just not gone....:bang: )!

I have thought about transferring the upgraded alternator when I plan on doing my cummins conversion- but, I am not sure that the accessory bracket that Jonesy sells would accept the slightly different alternator....

a custom bracket to fit a newer model alternator would be cool though! but, I wonder if the wiring would be compromised- definate wire upgrade would be in mind... I upgraded my wiring when I did my upgraded alternator- original wiring was showing severe signs of being old and was in desperate need of replacment anyway...

The plot thickens:

Yes, 80A version is convertible to 160A as well.

The housings from your alternator will be used. No core involved. No bracket change, same pulley will be used.

I will tear down my truck as soon as the semester is over, which will be 3 weeks??!!

I will post up a review on the alternator as everything comes together & do periodical follow up in my build thread.

oh, this should be interesting! lookin forward to seeing this develop...

I stand corrected- I called and he claims either 80amp or 90amp is upgrade-able to 160amp- which is the first I ever heard for an 80amp upgrade option. I would like to see how this pans out... happy with my current setup never the less... and the upgrade would be cheaper if you didnt have to source a 90amp and bracket like I did 150.00 (90amp alternator and bracket) plus the 185.00 rebuild and shipping cost... I just wonder how well they hold up with the long haul of daily use and abuse... Lord knows- I have used and abused the crap out of mine...

I have been emailing with Cliff and yes the 80 amp is upgradeable to 160amp with no modifications. He even suggested a smaller diameter pulley to increase output at idle. I asked if he had those in stock. I am awaiting a response.

Since my old unit is sitting in a box and ready to go, I think I will send it in and see what happens. The pricing seems to be inline with others out there, and these guys say that they have a 48 hour turnaround. Not that I'm in a hurry.

my question is- where the heck were they couple years back when i did my alternator upgrade?! :bang:

Cliff confirmed that all internals are new. The only thing they re-use is the shell. I'm going to send my old one to him along with a stock pulley and see what comes back. Since my current OEM alternator is working just fine, it will make a good spare after the swap.
I hope they're not using $0.99 bearings and other parts.
