*Notes sent in with my last sample*

Engine Make: Toyota (Original Engine)
Engine Model: 1FZ-FE 4.5L Inline 6
Fuel Type: Gasoline
Sample Date: 11/28/12
Mileage at previous interval: 290,102 miles
Mileage on this interval: 309, 123 miles
Mileage on oil: 19,021 miles
Oil Added between Interval: 5.5 Quarts (see note)
Oil Type: Toyota Brand 10w-30 Conventional Oil (bottled by Exxon/Mobil)

Remarks:
5 Quarts of make-up oil was added over time due to a leaky oil pump seal.
The Oil Pump seal was replaced at 18,796 miles and 1/2 Quart was added at this time.
I was advised to push my intervals to 12,000 miles based on my previous analysis, however, I pushed this interval a bit further because the oil still appeared to be golden on the dipstick (obviously due to the added oil).

1) Was the oil changed when sample was taken? (YES)
2) Are you interested in extended oil use? (YES)
3) Have you used any additives? (NO)
4) Would you like a TBN (Additional cost of $10.00) (YES)

Additional comments and Question:

Over the last few weeks of this interval, I've noticed a slight hint of blue smoke on acceleration, but only after the engine has been idling for more than 30 minutes.

I know prolonged idling is not advised, but is necessary in my line of work.

There's no smoke during cold starts or under normal use, only after extended idling and it immediately goes away.

Not sure if this has anything to do with internal issues or just the oil breaking down from all the mileage, but after changing to fresh oil (same type), I don't see anymore smoke, even after extended idling.

Because of this, would you suggest stepping up a grade and/or perhaps a high mileage oil?

I'm thinking about going with Mobil Super High Mileage 10w-40, but would like to hear your thoughts on this first.

Now a few questions:

1) I've used the same conventional oil since day one @ 81,xxx miles (Toyota 10w-30) without any additional additives.
Why would my report now show high levels of Titanium as an additive
The only contaminants I can think of is when I replaced the oil pump seal @ 18,796 miles into the interval, I sprayed some brake cleaner to clean the mating surface and used a little cocoa butter to hold the seal in place (didn't have any Vaseline or silicone grease on hand).
Neither of which contain Titanium :hhmm:

2) Towards the end of my interval, I noticed just a slight puff of blue smoke only after long periods of idling.
It never happened during initial start ups, so I don't think it's the valve seals :hhmm:
Has anyone here had this kind of smoke problem?

3) Now with fresh oil (actually about 3,xxx miles into the current interval), there's no smoke at all with zero leaks and no consumption, so I'm thinking whatever the problem is can be helped with either a thicker grade or high mileage oil :meh:
Any thoughts on this?

I guess I'm not ready to dive into the motor with a head job, especially since it's running perfectly without issue (on the original HG to boot!!)

Looks like a slightly different additive package, no moly and now titanium, new batch of oil, did you open a new case?

High mileage motors tend to burn some oil, idling is when it can build up in the intake, etc, then burn off when throttled. Check the breathers, PCV, etc, other than that, drive it, no worries.

The 1FZ was designed in the days of thicker oils and are the recommended oil for everybody but USA. Sounds like it's good to go! :meh:

Once again, very nice result! Shows how well designed the 1FZ is, to be still that easy on oil, delivering that result at 300K and 19K on the oil is way .

Lots of titanium in paint. You weren't idling the rig near where it might have sucked in some overspray possibly?

Just a WAG, but thought I'd offer it in the spirit of the season:)

Yes, I had went through my old stock and ordered up another 20 cases for my shop when I did the change for that interval :hhmm:

With 30% off through my account at Toyota, I get it cheaper than the cheapest stuff on the shelves at VatoZone :D

I just spoke with Bill at Blackstone and he said liquid Titanium is the latest additive that oil companies are starting to dump into their mix, so basically anything on the shelf that is current will have high levels of the stuff :hhmm:

He also said that since I don't have any smoke or consumption issues with the fresh oil, that he would suggest stepping up to 10w-40 based on the mileage and area of use

I did recently change the PCV and hose (the valve was still good, but the hose felt hard and brittle)

I'll step up to either Mobil 10w-40 Super 5000 or Exxon Superflo 10w-40 for the next change

Since the Toyota oil I've been using is bottled by Exxon/Mobil, either one should have the closest matching formula (even the bottles are the same lol)

Thing is, Toyota also has a 10w-40, but it's not available through my dealer  (JDM only?)

I'll have to get some part numbers and cross check with CDan :hhmm:

And conventional oil to boot :grinpimp:

I own a body shop, so yes, over spray fumes are the norm, but nothing out of the ordinary for this vehicle since I've owned it :hhmm:

10-40 exists. Toyota's ordering requires a mimimum order of 25 cases. Nothing in the last ~20 model years specs 10-40 so there is virtually no demand for it.

A dealer can combine weights to get to the 25 case minimum.

EDIT: 10-40 is NOT avaiable any longer. Discontinued.

Thanks Dan :)

Happen to have a PN or code for the 10w-40?

When I placed my last order, my guy behind the counter said that 5w-30 and 10w-30 were the only conventional oils available to them

I love when I get PN's from the board to prove him wrong :grinpimp:

25 case minimum isn't a problem since we've moved to Toyo oil for general shop use (cheaper than the crAPA and VatoZone stuff)

well I just went in to the TCMC program to verify availability and by cracky the stuff is indeed discontinued. it was 00279-1QT40.

Bummer.....

I ran it on Partsvoice and there are 15 dealers with some stock left.

...

That would explain it, ti replacing the moly.
