Decided to go ahead and try to take the roof rack off. Against the advice of others I just went at it. No PB Blaster beforehand or anything. Seven of the 8 rack mounting screws went very easy. Just ease on the pressure with the screwdriver and they came right out. One did not cooperate.
I did follow the other threads advice and cut off the rubber mounting food to get to the nutsert. It's hard to get to, because they do not extend very far out of the roof. I tried lifting the rack to see if I could put some pressure on the bottom side but no go.
Walking back to the garage I contemplating using a hacksaw or sawzall.
Then I decided to try and use one of my picks to wedge between the screw and the nutsert to see if I could lock the nutsert but still turn the screw.
Well, I'm not sure about the actual mechanics of how it worked but it did. Inserted a 90 degree pick into the joint where they meet and turned. Because the collar at top of the nutsert was broken off it did lock against the pick.
Thankfully the screw and nutsert were not rusted together. Screwed right out.
I still have about 3/4 of the top of the nutsert so I am going to try the plastic cap method presented in one of the threads on rack removal.
Obviously, I may have gotten VERY lucky and your results might vary. Just wanted to post this method up for the forum.
