Why will 62 split case not work behind FZJ trannys?

Been searching but haven't found the specific reason, only statements that it won't work...

Why will a split case from an FJ62 not bolt up behind either the a440 of a343 in an FZJ80? I've seen a statement that the tail shaft in the a440 of the 62 is longer than the shaft in the 80 a440, but I suspect that could be swapped if one so desired. What other reasons are there? Surely this idea has been thoroughly investigated, but for an option that ought to be so appealing, I'm surprised I can't quickly find reasons why it won't work. What am I missing?

Why would you want a split case when you can easily convert the HF2AV to part time?

What is your goal?

I like the idea of the manual, lever controlled engagement of 4wd. Plus, the idea of doing such a swap. I understand that most would claim that's not a real strong reason for wanting this swap, but that's about it.

Why I want to do it to the side... why won't it work?

I think you answered your own question in the first post. It would be easier to do the part time mod to the 80 case and replace the actuator with a lever I would think. You would have to fab the lever with the split case too.

Then do it and report back. I looked into it a bit, decided there was no advantage, so moved on to other projects that would improve the rig.

With advanced adapters coming out with the 4:1 gear set for the FJ60/62 split case that would be a pretty easy way to get lower gears in the transfer case plus having the option of rear wheel drive only.

I think what I'll probably end up doing is the basic part-time conversion to the hf2a case and save this for another time. Its interesting to consider, but given that I don't currently have a lot of free time, I don't need to devote a lot of time into what to me would end up being a novelty when other things get me the same advantage... kind of what Tools R Us was alluding to above. It's fun to think about, at least...

Also, one should not forget that you can easily bolt up a pto drive on the split case...

It can be done.

You need an output shaft and extension housing from a FJ62 A440F, among other small piece parts. With these parts swapped into the FZJ80 A442F, the split case will bolt up. If you have a FJ80, just swap the whole trans sans bellhousing and converter.

Having personally swapped the output shaft in one of these transmissions, it is not incredibly difficult. Just time consuming, messy, and you NEED to be organized and have a CLEAN workspace when you do it.

To get this right, I could just get a complete trans and tcase out of the 60 and just swap the bell housing and converter?

If you have a 91-92 FJ80, just get a FJ62 A440F, and swap the bellhousing, converter, and possibly TV cable/dipstick tube.

If you have a 93-94 FZJ80, You will need to do what I described above, swap the output shafts, extension housings, other misc. small parts in the tail of the trans.

If you have a 95-97 FZJ80, you will need to get a A442F from a junkyard out of a 93-94 FZJ80, then do what I described above. The A442F will work with the electronics in the A343F equipped trucks.

I would imagine a 4:1 gear set would be plenty of reason for many to want to swap to the FJ60 case, I would be interested.

that gear swap also changes your 4WH a bit..... so if you have stock gears and want lower ones for driving it would work.... i've already swapped mine and don't want lower gears for street driving.

How does it change the 4WH? Stock it's 1:1 for high, and the split case looks like it's the same.

What's the difference between the A343F and the A440/442F that prevents swapping the output shaft from a A440 onto the A343F?

The A4xxx trannies are completely different than the A3xxx series.

Sure, but from my understanding the A3xxx and A4xxx trannies both bolt up to the same t-case (just with or without the VC).

Since they both can bolt up to the same t-case, what is the difference that prevents you from swapping the same parts to bolt them up to the split case?
