Good news...again. My motor really does well with the Chevron Delo 15w40 at 4k+ intervals.

Alvin,
So what is your air filter? Significant enough off-roading to be a "test" in your mind or more "just passing thru"?

OEM air filter and significant offroad time, especially barreling down dirt roads. As you can see my silicon is pretty low. Universal averages are well above what I'm getting.

I just got back my report on my Delo 400 15W40.
I had them measure the TBN which was about 4. I believe that the fresh oil is about 11. So I could likely go quite a bit longer on the oil than the 5000 miles I did this time.

I'm guessing looking at the Moly result that yours is the new formulation of Delo, the LE? That one has a lower TBN to start with, though, IIRC.

I love chevron delo 15w-40 and i hope they never change it, used it before the cruiser and plan to continue. i change my oil at 5k also with that stuff.

so what is this about changing the formula?

Its unfortunate to see the calcium levels dropping in the new low emission oils. Look at the 07 results, there @ the 3k mark and now down into the dismal 1500 range. I do not think to date they have been able to replicate the same bearing pasification and thermal stability results that calcium provides.
All said, your numbers look well given usage and mileage.

The delo 400 Multigrage 15w40 was a much different oil, you on average saw a calcium content of 3-3500ppm and a JASO / DH-1 rating. Now with the new DPF systems in diesels many of the important ingredients that made delo what it was had to be lowered and substitutes put in there places so not to harm these new systems. This change was significant enough i noticed that the new delo 400 LE 15w40 had to drop the JASO / DH-1 designation.
Unfortunately not the same oil anymore, altho it is still a superior oil in comparison to many north american competitors i will search out any delo 400 multigrade left in local stocks before i look into bringing in chevron/caltex.

Just my .02

Chevron Supreme is great too. I've stocked up on Delo and Supreme from Costco at great prices.
both have the "ISO SYN" symbol, I believe they are a cut above similar priced oils.

Alvin,
Sounds like the stock air filter has the goods.

Brings up another question. Snorkel or no snorkel?

I've been considering it, but more for getting above the dust than water crossing. Dust is not a bid deal here in the Midwest, but out West where I do most of my off-roading it's more of a concern.

To a certain degree, it's also the look, to be honest, so it's also $300+ that could be spent elsewhere. It sounds like you've got the real-world experience that might shed some light on the subject of just how much weight I should give to looks versus performance in prioritizing this mod.

No snorkel Mike, never could justify spending the money. I live and wheel in southern Arizona. I don't cross much deep water. I have crossed 3' of water before, no snorkel, anything deeper than that and I'm turning around.

I keep 2 of the OEM filters. They are cleanable. When I take one out to clean it, I put the clean, dry one in.

Alvin,
Thanks. Very interesting. I thought I'd seen that was where you roamed. Last I was in that country was when I went to visit my brother and an old roomie of ours in Phoenix in '78. It's a long way there from here in a FJ55.

Also spent some time there in the early 60s and know about the blowing dust and sand. I remember tumbleweeds stacked to the eaves where lived on what was the edge of Mesa at the time.

Nothing against snorkels and I'm sure that there are places where they prove their worth as far as cleaning up intake air. But your results via the oil analysis do speak volumes about the stock Toyota filtration system being, ahem, completely adequate and serviceable.

I might take the snorkel plunge, because there are places where The Sacred Cow might wander where water could be an issue enough, but it's further down the priority list now.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning those big air filters. One more thing to like. I'm kinda OCD about such things, so I'm more likely to keep the last one or two in case I need it than I am to reuse it, but I might just give it a try considering your documented, positive results on the issue.:hhmm:
