It started a few months ago, a slight whirring -- now it's to a whistle, even shut with the "courtesy cover" shut --

-- I know, there's old posts on this, but I don't know what to do -- lube it with marine grease was one answer, and the other one was to remove and re-shim the mother --

-- I even bought the accessory wind-deflector from c-dan, and to no avail --

-- the leak is in the front (why) of the sunroof, and it's supposedly "protected" by the wind-deflector, but is still noisy --

Why don't you just replace the Gasket. It cost about $70 and does the job right. Unless you can find duct tape to match the color of the car. I use Long Project Masking Tape to Prove that it is the Sun Roof. It could be one of the door gaskets.

Eric, mine's still doing it too, after the grease job.

Am I mistaken, or is the 'gasket' refernced above an integral part of the sunroof itself?

Kit is correct, the "gasket" is part of the glass.

You can order the gasket and get a "free" sunroof glass along with it. :P

I have not attempted a sunroof glass replacement myself but it looks pretty involved.

Um,

Different part number?

The catalog indicates the glass thickness of the earlier application is 4.7mm and the glass thickness of the later application is 4.0mm.
I will go out on a limb and speculate that the reduction in glass thickness may have been an effort to shave weight from the vehicle. This change is concurrent with the reduction in seating capacity and addition of airbags.
This is a private guess and is not based on any "insider information" I do not know if the glasses will interchange but I would not be surprised if they will.

And No, I do not know why a thinner glass costs more. :flipoff2:

Changing the glass isn't very difficult. Once you remove the trim pieces inside the sunroof, you'll see the four (I think) nylock nuts used to secure the glass in place. Removing the trim pieces is prolly the toughest part. They're similar to your trim pieces that you remove in the foot area panel, over the rocker panel, etc. Be careful not to break the plastic barb pieces. There are shims under each of those nuts and you can monkey with the shims to see if your noise improves. You can also loosen the nuts to move the glass forward/backward to make it seal better.

Good luck,
Ali

Eric,

We have had a post within the past 6 months where someone (sorry, can't recall who) was *determined* to fix his noisy sunroof. He had a plan that involved epoxy, tape, and a couple of other things. His first tactic was to take it to a pro that specialized in sunroofs. Turns out that was the right thing to do and his roof noise was substantially reduced.

I'll try to find the original thread....

Later...
OK, Here is Hitman's post that I was remembering. Maybe something in here is relevant to a fix for your noise.

Good Luck!

Eric,

How sure are you that it's the sunroof? Others have had roofrack noise. Have you taped up the sunroof gap with masking tape to see if it is the problem?
