I figure I'll share some of my tricks on how I do harnesses and electrical conversionsfor people's projects.

This tech's useful for restorations, repairs, swapping to newer/older switches, etc-etc. These are from 4Runners, Mini's, and Tacoma's through 2001, and can also be similarly found in other Toyota vehicles such as Land Cruisers and cars (Corollas, Camrys, RAV, etc.).

*I'll try to reshoot the fuzzy pics later w/ a better camera w/ better macro.

96-2000(1) Tacoma/4Runner ECT Switch
Denatured Mineral Spirits
Shop Rag
Micro Screwdriver

Pull apart the ECT Switch and pop off the push button w/ the micro screwdriver. Put a small amount of denatured mineral spirits on a rag and rub the black lettering and white backing primer color off the switch's push button. Wipe off any excess mineral spirits, pop the push button back in place and reassemble the switch. Combine switch with existing harness assembly by unpinning the harness with the micro screwdriver and installing the related pins into the harness piece you now need.

Reinstall and admire your handiwork!

^*That stupid alarm led's gotta go, lemme see if I can do something nicer?
This also works to integrate a older style factory alarm LED indicator to an aftermarket alarm system. Pure stealth, and it all looks factory! :D

Great Work! thanks for educating me and for sharing!

Glad to help.

*PICS PENDING*

2ndGen 4Runner Rear Window Switch to 3rdGen 4Runner Window Switch Swap.

**Anyone got a quick trick to doing wiring schematics w/ a MacBook and Gimp??**

~I cut the 2ndGen harness plug male half off and reused it after getting my wiring sorted.

~DISCLAIMER: Proceed at your own risk and expertise, test your wires first and properly solder and insulate them. If you blow a window motor, fuse, short anything out, or your rig up it's your fault, NOT MINE(!).

3rdGen Wires-----2ndGen Wires

DarkGreen/Black Strip-----Green/Yellow Strip.

LightGreen/Black Strip-----Blue

Red/Black Strip-----Green/Blue Strip

Indicator Light is the last 4 wires, I forgot which was which and by that point wasn't too worried, ground color to ground color and tested it out, runs fine.

Pics later on, I promise.

How to bypass/Remove the rear window lock switch/control for '92-'93 4Runner center console.

I took a look at another rear window lockout switch today and my suspicions that it was indeed the blue and yellow wires pictured below that become white/black-stripe and white/red-stripe were correct.

Simply unplug the switch from the 4 prong blue harness and jumper the two white wires (white/black-stripe and white/red-stripe). Fold the jumper wire over, black tape a small piece over the top to prevent the jumper from coming loose and anything from getting in there and then use a 1" long section of the appropriate heat shrink tube to seal/hold everything together. Your rear window switch as well as all the door switch functions will remain intact including the door window lock-out switch. Tuck the harness back under the console and throw a blank cover or whatever replacement switch assembly you wish in there. :bounce:

I'll ask vipergrhd to get me a pic of what I did to include if you need. (Picking up a replacement 32gb camera card tomorrow for the other promised pics.)

:steer: Here's the switch I am referring to.

OK I got one for ya... 85 4Runner power window switches are unobtainium any more... so what to do for a replacement? Of course a direct plug in that also works in the door panel would be the best, but I'm not picky I'd be OK with wiring the switches into a custom panel under the radio. Ideas?

NEW are unobtainium. So... I'm OK with a replacement from a newer Toyota.

Bump, here you go msahr, reproduction/new are apparently available still. I replied to IslanderoffRoad's similar post. https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota-truck-tech/582227-88-power-window-switches.html

7 pages of Toyota Specific Switch assemblies from Switch Doctor, look at the parts and you see what I meant about the cross usability: Amazon.com At a Glance: Switch Doctor

You mean these, correct?

I found these recently IIRC the guys name is SwitchDoctor:

Hopefully one of our supporting vendors like Lowe, C'Dan, or Beno can chime in with similar or better choices.

Also, given the interchangability of some electrical parts it's entirely possible you could source some from Spector Off-Road so long as you have a picture of what you need and tell Marv to find a matching piece possibly off of a Land Cruiser. (Last time I called for a restoration batch of parts like center caps he had no clue that what I ordered also is for mini trucks, etc.)

Short version, don't just limit your searching to Mini or 4Runner specific terms, you can also use Corolla, Camry, Cressida, etc that are from the same era. Cross referencing the Toyota Owners Restoration Club of America might turn up some good options since I know we recently found parts for auto windowed AE-86's that are the exact passenger switch pictured above. :D

**Mods, please combine the threads so I can keep this all in one spot? Maybe put it into the FAQ's under a different title or within the main FAQ under the other electrical stuff?**
