My truck has around 190K and needs a headgasket. I was thinking about doing a rebuild while I'm at it. I would like to know what the rebuild would cost, assuming I do all the work. The big costs would be parts and machine shop work. Any advice is appreciated.

at 190k on a RE I would suspect the cyl walls to be in good order. But other factors can add to deterioration as well as some factors like hwy only, never used for towing, etc. can lessen the effect.

I would:

Test the compression, b/f I tore it down.

Then, once the head is off, inspect the cyl. walls for condition, looking for factory hone marks and for a ridge at the top of the cyl. walls. That will let you know how much of the wall has been worn away from the rings.

Since the head is gonna come off for the HG, that's a given. It goes to the head shop to be checked for warpage, cleaning, cracks and the installation of valve seals. I have paid $100 in the past for several heads to be done like this and consider it cheap insurance.

Now the rebuild....?

Dude, that's gonna take mucho time and cost you mucho money. Weather or not you need it, I just hope you know that. It is highly complex and if you need a place to start to educate yourself on that, I suggest you DL a FSM from the FAQ in the sticky's. An engine rebuild is covered in great detail in it.

and please, for the love of mike consider this as replacements for plastic....

Are the guides plastic?

If so, how proficient at light fabrication are you?

As long as the chain has not put a hole into the cover it will be fine. Just put some REAL guides back into it.

And this thread but go down a little then it starts

I'd say a vise, a hacksaw and some determination would end the plastic guides going back into my truck. I have never seen the plastic guide on the slack side break so at the very least get the tension side. They always break.

Check out Engnbldr.com for parts. I think if I was going to rebuild one myself, I would buy the bottom end parts from someone like Ted at engnbldr and then buy a performance topend and cam from either Ted or LCEngineering or DOAracing. When faced with the same thoughts about my engine, I went ahead and bought a performance long block from Tim at DOAracing. That was not the most cost effective solution but I haven't regretted the decision.

fact is you probobly dont need a lot of machine work. Ive done 6 22re's and they were all on a low budget. two of em the lower end was outa spec so I just went and found another that was fine for cheap. You dont even have to send the head out for anything usually. its nice... they come back lookin brand new, but as far as rebuilding the engine if you do everything yourself you can do it for 250$ fluids including.

Just get yourself a good straight edge and a good micrometer and go check your tolerances. ill wager that nothing "needs" to be sent to a machinist.

I have built over a dozen of them. If it is not knocking, I would take the head off....send it to a machine shop to have it milled and get valve job. Should be less than $200. Get a timing chain kit (with METAL GUIDE) and gaskets.....go to ebay. cnsautoparts is the seller. They have everything you need. Complete gaskets sets for less than $50.
Good luck

I agree with the above.
I spent big bucks rebuilding my motor with all the right stuff 2200.00 and after all that my wife's junk yard motor out runs mine.
20 over, new larger valves, balanced, blue printed, polished, arp rod bolts, header, larger muffler system, on and on... the motor I thought you should build from every thing that I have read on all the forums. should put out around a 150 hp.. NOT.

So I could have gone through 2 or 3 motors for the same price.
get the head checked, use good or Toyota gaskets and run the heck out of it.

I am building an extra motor, it has a spun bearing on number 3 rod. just going to get the crank turned, bearings and that is it.

not worth it for the big bucks rebuild.
