I have sheared the OEM and one slightly larger shear pin I put in on my PTO winch on Sunday.

For a replacement - what metal and diameter would be recommended, while still retaining its "fuse" value, that is to break just ahead of the next most expensive part.

not really, i had a buddy that forgot to disengage and he drove off, snapped his housing in 2...

Who can supply Toyota Upgraded PTO Shear pin

Is it true that none of the Canadian spec BJ70's (1985, 86, 87) came with the PTO winch, if so then I doubt Toyota Canada will have Part # 90240-05004.

Did the PTO winch come on any other Canadian spec model -- if so which model.

If not -- who else might I try ...?

I just went to Lordco and they gave me a bunch of shear pins for free.I drilled it out to the next standard size up from metric. I keep now a proper size drift and extra pins with me.
What worries me with a pto winch is when the pin lets go, all hell brakes loose, with a eletric winch you have at least the drag of the eletric motor to slow things down.

hummm, when ever i have seen one let go it just stopped...
what do you mean "all hell breaks loose"?

My mistake, I was referring to the woodruff key on the worm gear not the shear pin.The key sheared off as I was pulling a vehicle out of a steep gulley, we were almost to the top when the thing let go....it was quite amusing when it hit bottem.
I think the wrong size key at the factory caused it to break.I guess that could happen with a electric whinch as well.

Factory PTO Shear-pin

For the record - Toyoto has no listing for the factory upgrade PTO shear-pin, part # 90240-05504

saga continues ...

I called Ens Toyota (Saskatoon), they said the number came up on their computer and they said the parts could be ordered from Vancouver. I called Metro Toyota (the local Toyota monopoly on Southern Vancouver Island), who before said the part number was NOT on their system and informed them that Ens Toyota said the part is available out of Vancouver.

then magically -- Metro said they found the part number and could get them from Vancouver.

I have ordered two and will report back if they are a factory upgrade or the original ones that are too soft. Thanks for the info.

Oh yeah they are $1.32 each. Must be the cheapest, and most labor generating part to break on the trail...

OEM upgrade

The Toyota OEM "upgraded" PTO winch shear pin is available from Vancouver. It is 5mm in diameter and of unknown hardness. If it shears off again - I will report back.

H55F tranny troubles

Just having joined all of you in the adventures of land cruising, I have found myself last month stranded in France, whilst being on the way to northern Africa, hoping to make it into the darker corners of African culture. Anyway, the dear old HZJ75 with an enormous little hump on the back, our little house,

right at the border of Switzerland and France, she would not go another inch. Well, when we took everything part, it is the old; it seems problem of the shaft splines having worn down, even on this heavy-duty version of the HZJ
Here is the mangled shaft:

hope you can see the pictures

I bought a couple of the shear pins with the number Wayne gave me. I don't know if it's the same as the one posted. I ordered these at Alpine Toyota in Cranbrook who are probably the most Land Cruiser illiterate dealer I have ever dealt with and they found them!
