In the middle of an interior restoration and seeking feedback on roof liner options to be installed under the headliner.
For those that have this experience can you list 1) what you did and 2) how it is holding up?

Currently considering D**aliner 1/8 inch peel and stick material.
I am not certain how it will hold up in the long run and if there is a better sound/heat barrier option.
Given the work involved in removing/installing headliner, I do not want to do this again.

Thanks in advance.

I simply glued Reflectix using head-lined spray adhesive to the underside of the roof of my old '91 Suburban. I had hoped that it would help with temperature control. I didn't expect it to also help with noise, but was pleasantly surprised by it doing both. Should the head-liner in my 60 ever come out I plan to do the same thing with it.

The sounddeadenershowdown recommendations sound intriguing. I haven't tried them yet, but intend to at least experiement. The explanations make sense to me. Most info is here:

but the way his site is organized, it's probably worth reading the separate section about the 3M material.

I used Lizard Skin products. http://www.lizardskin.com/ Spray it on. First the sound deadener, then the ceramic heat control.

I then sprayed on tinted Monstaliner, for a finished look. I'm not putting up the headliner. They fade, shrink and get ripped, right after you finish putting it up.

Got any pics of that? I'm getting ready to spray some Second Skin Spectrum and some Hy-Tech insulating paint(supposedly equivalent to LizardSkin but a good bit cheaper) and I'm thinking of not going back with a headliner.
Has the LS helped?

I'm afraid I may have to get involved in the same thing....some type of headliner replacement... I figure once the old headliner comes out...its over in regard to trying to get it back in there without rips or whatever...given the age of the truck I generally expect the headliner to come apart when trying to get it out.

I would also like to see some pics where anyone has used some type of spray on insulation product. Also would like to know how well that worked for sound control and heat control... What type of prep work is required?

Plan to install the Sp*ct*r Off Road ivory vinyl headliner, not the old original.
Anyone had any experience with these?

I have several pictures in my build thread. Here are a few.

I got all the glue off, then painted on Zero Rust, before spraying the Lizard Skin.

Two coats sound deadener
two coats ceramic insulation
@ six coats tinted monstaliner. Tinted Cygnus White and it didn't want to cover the black.

I did learn they have a white Creamic insulation, that would work better, if covering with the white paint.

Very easy to do.

Elbert,

I can't tell you how well the heat is controled, but as far as the sound deadener, it's great. The bare roof would ring loud, if you thumped it, now you just hear a dull thud. I did every panel on the 55, doors, tailgate, etc. It's nice to close a door and not hear the tinny sound.

Yes, installed one 2 yrs ago. It went in quite well. When you remove the old headliner, keep the rods in order! Do not mix them up. Start in the rear in the middle. Work your way out to the edges, then forward. You will have to remove all the windows.

To get back to this thread topic, I wish I'd heard of this lizard skin, I would have sprayed in on, then installed the headliner. I think it would have improved noise and kept it cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter when camping.

Interesting read; definitely come in handy once I get my cruiser running well enough to worry about sound instead of just getting from A to B.

Thank you all for the comments. Anyone know of a workable Lizardskin application alternative to spraying?

I read somewhere that you could spray with an airless sprayer--is that correct?
Scrap you got any pics with the cross braces and everything back in? did you spray those too? Did you glue them back or leave them "floating"?

TClark,

No I don't. I'm building my own out of alum. tubing. It will be used for several things around the roof line. The roof braces, on a 55, are not too attractive and in my opinion, not too useful for bracing the roof. ( only two of them ) I'm not putting the headliner back up, so I thought, why not build something alittle more functional that will support better and hold a few things.

Time for that will be later, though.

Hmmm, very interesting idea---haven't thought of that. I'm thinking about going without the headliner on my rig but haven't figured out exactly how to make it look ok yet.

Scrapdaddy,
You put my project to shame. Very nicely done.

Conclusion: Removing the last layer of adhesive without removing paint was difficult without damaging paint. I ended up going with the 1/8" Dyn***iner applied with an additional industrial grade adhesive for droop prevention. I have ordered 3 section padding from Toyota for additional sound proofing that will be applied on top of the Dliner with same adhesive. End of the interior roof lining portion of the rebuild and on to the headliner install. Thanks

Thanks 87,

I think you'll be fine with the sound deadener, you put up. I know how I am and sure as heck, I'd rip the headliner or poke a hole in it right off, so none for me.

Hope I didn't jink you. :)
