NQCruiser's "Chief - the Beginning..."

OK, so a while ago I posted up my new-to-me HJ60 wagon named "The Chief" in the 60 Series registry. It's a 2H powered, 5spd manual with 4.11 diffs and the ambulance doors. It was a basic/standard model from factory, but has had the 1 & 1 3/4 front seat arrangement replaced with a 2 x Bucket seat setup. After pulling all the old crappy seat covers and bead mats off it I found that I had scored a set of Recaro seats, but they are in need of a bit of TLC to be really comfortable just yet. I've been farting about with it here and there between far too many work commitments and trying to be a good Dad to my also-newish-to-me 14 month old daughter, who will hopefully grow up to enjoy trips away in it.

I've been scraping together bits and pieces from ebay and other 4x4 forums, as well as mates, mates of mates and family to try and build a reasonably capable "outback" and beach tourer that will someday get me to the gulf/tip and back as well as over to the Northern Territory and W.A. I've gotten some good and not so good deals, and been sniped on plenty of good stuff over the last 6 or 7 months that I've had the vehicle home, but we are finally starting to put the whole show together.

I'll only chuck up the before and after pics for the minute until I can get the better ones from my work computer, but you will get the idea.

The start...
TheChief01.jpg

The Globe Bathurst rims were fited to replace some old and mismatched 15x7 white steelies, but otherwise this is how it was driven home from Brisbane, 1350km away. The tyres are 31x10.5 R15's and the springs & shocks are just flat as all hell. On the cards for the next month or so is the OME Heavy spring upgrade and new shocks as well.

Next came the extended shackles, bonnet protector and Hella Ralleye 4000 lights that were swapped off my recently departed 100 series work vehicle. The shackles at least made it look less obvious that the springs and shocks were toast, but eventually they just sagged back to their normal level of stuffed-ness

The next major upgrade was the purchase of a used early series ARB winch capable bullbar from a guy in Melbourne (about 2500-3000 km away). Managed to swing a deal that got it to North Queensland for FREE baby!!! Was a little rusty and had a couple of rust holes in it but with some strategic drilling, grinding and welding it looks as good as new and now has the indicator holes it it which the earlier ones didn't have. Also got a cheap 9500lb Moto-Zone winch through the Aldi grocery chain for $500 with 2yr warranty which has been fitted but not wired in yet. Plan is to mount the control box under the bonnet somewhere, so that it isn't out in the weather all the time. Also blacked out the light surrounds, grille and rear vent panels. I have also KillRust-ed the frame and towbar and repainted the rear bumper and fitted a used old-school Kaymar swing-out carrier. I'll post photo's of this once I get the chance.

Then I bought these tyres and rims form a guy I worked with down south - Cooper STT's in a 285/75 R16 size, only done 5000 or 6000km on a trip around Australia and bought all 4 rims and tyres for $1K. Each of the tyres alone would have set me back about $430 each new. Unfortunately the rims are from a Nissan Patrol - the stud pattern and size is OK, but the rim doesn't have the right backspacing, so the rim rubs the TRE. I'm going to try and trade all the other rims as well as these ones on a set that will fit properly.

After:

I fitted them on anyway to see how it looks - I did crack a minor horn over the looks so I guess it is starting to look about right. Unfortunately it also tells me that I need the new springs and shocks NOW....

The cardboard box under it is to soak up a small diesel leak from a perished hose, and it looks like the rear diff pinion seal is starting to leak also - I guess now the madness really begins...

Hopefully I can get the new rims in Black and then continue the black theme with sliders/steps and some darker tinting.
At this point I would like to thank/curse Trapper.50cal and a few others for some of the photos that have been inspiration for this slow build.

I'll get there eventually - patience is a virtue.........that I do not possess in any way, shape or form.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look!!

whoa! That looks way betterNice looking cruiser!

Could you please elaborate about the “indicator holes” that earlier ARB bumpers did not have?

Nice truck by the way, looks real clean. Be careful looking at Trapper’s cruiser. You’ll end up spending way too much cash on it. I guess we all end up doing that since we’re in this forum always looking for upgrades.

anyone know where to get a bonnet / hood protector in the states? Thinking about fabing up one out of the auto bra material but yours is pretty cool- need to cover up the dents I already got! Nice truck

Thanks for all the positive comments guys!! Randy88FJ62, I'm hearing you loud and clear about Trapper's rig!!

As for the indicator holes, the bullbar I picked up was one of two original models offered for the F/HJ 60/61/62 series. From what I can tell, the differences were that one was suited to High-Mount winch appliocations and the other to Low-Mount winch applications. I only realised this when it turned up and there were some gussets in the front of the bar that meant that the Low-Mount winch I had wouldn't fit. MUD came to the rescue for me and I trawled through a lot of images and on-line .PDF's until I found pictures of the inside of the low-mount version and saw that the gussets weren't there. I couldn't see anything that looked like extra support/strenghthening in the low-mount version, so I just cut the gussets out.

Anyway, there were no indicator holes in mine and looking at a few around of various Oz websites, it looked to be a common theme. All the new models have them as standard now, but that has probably come about more through changes in laws than anything else.

Also, I found the picture of the Chief when I first picked it up in May this year:

And before anyone says it, yes, I am aware that it is not actually a Series 60 Detroit engine. I liked the stickers, and there wasn't too much else around in the way of decals for these things. :flipoff2:

Spector has em.

thats a nice clean looking hj60,its gonna look great with a cuppla inches lift, how many klms on it?

More info on detroit diesel please. How are they related to your truck's engine? I visit them twice a year for work.

Goldchaser, thanks mate, it's got 345,000 km on it and is as neat as a pin. Came from the Darling Downs area - hence the high kms and low rust. I hand painted the frame with KillRust to try and keep it that way now that it is at home about 10km from the ocean in North QLD. BTW, been reading up on your rig too, nice work there!! That colour will look great on the 60 shape. I may have to rip out my A/C fan also as it appears to have chit itself just after I got the A/C re-gassed. Any tips?

Randy88FJ62, Detroit Diesel has nothing to do with the truck other than the fact that the decals looked good and "Series 60" was close enough to "60 Series" for me so they got a guernsey.

SurfFJ62, this one was an ebay special from a mob in Western Australia, there are a few different types, but this particular one comes in black or clear.

Trapper.50cal, the sliding windows are handy sometimes, but they also catch and hold a lot of crap which can lead to rust when mixed with water. I'm in a major sugar cane growing area of North Queensland, and we are one of the few areas that still burns the cane before it is harvested. For 6 months of the year we just get burnt ash raining down on everything in town. I generally hose out the sills every week or so to stop the build-up of junk from blocking the drains in the sills. Also, yes, I do have the the "Oh s***" or "Geezus" bar on the glovebox. Judging by he twists in the leather cover, it has been used a couple of times too!!!

Ive got the dash out of mine at the moment but you can pull the fan motor etc by just droping it out the bottom, you'll see, when you pull the motor apart watch the brush springs, they can fly off anywhere when ya slide the motor out.
When ya put it back together you can actually bend two little tabs open where the brushes sit, then you can slide the brushes and springs in after the motor is in position, then close tabs again that hold the springs /brushes in.
If your brushes are ok you might just have a loose connection somewhere.

more photos of yours and trappers rigs please:D,beige was on my shortlist of colours for mine.

There...pix whoring over. Back to your regularly scheduled Aussie HJ thread

You know, I think that is nearly the first time I have seen your rig from front on!!

I've just got back from the workshop where I've spent a satisfying Boxing Day working on the 60 and listening to the cricket on crackly AM radio. Jobs completed today include wiring up the Hella 4000's, making and mounting the rear reversing/camp light pole on the rear wheel carrier, making and installing a mount plate for my MagLite, starting a couple of accessory power ports in the rear interior panels (cigarette lighter and tractor style 3 Pin Accessory plugs in each). I've also re-installed my towbar and have laid the groundwork for running heavy guage wire to the rear to run the reverse/camp light and power outlets. I'm also going to install one of those cheap little oscillating fans in the rear so my daughter will be allowed to come for drives with me. ATM it gets pretty hot in the back and with the A/C on the blink, I need some form of cooling airflow.

I have two questions: (A) What am I likely looking for when my A/C Blower stops blowing? The fuse in the dash is fine, and with the key on I can hear the click when the fan speed switch moves from "OFF" to "1", but nothing else happens. I would guess that there are no other fuses in there (that would be too easy) and that I am looking at something like a new set of brushes? I had the A/C checked out only about 4 weeks ago and they re-gassed it. It worked fine again for 1/2 a day and then the fan went kapuut. Could the added effort of actually having to circulate the newly compressed gas have just been too much for old brushes?

(B) The rear seats look to have some sort of hinge arrangement anchoring them to the floor. The back folds forward fine, but I can't help thinking that the bottom section must also be able to fold as well - maybe up to/against the back of the front seats? I'm not sure that this is right seeing as the carpet is attached to the rear floor AND the back of the seat, but I thought I would just ask the question.

More photo's in a day or two.
