I'm trading third members with a guy, who has a 73 fj-40 with 4.11's in it. I have an 85 fj-60 with 3.73 in. Is this going to be a straight up fit? thanks guys.

The only issue I ran into with that was that the flanges for the drive shaft did not match up. Other than that it is bolt on. So make sure you swap the flanges before you take the time to install.

73 is going to be course pinion and axle shafts, right?

unless he has 76 and up thirds it won't swap over, right?

you can swap the older course side gears with your newer side gears to make the axle shafts work. but you would still have the course pinion and your flange won't bolt up.

make sure he has fine spline thirds

I believe the course splines are only on the birfield/locking hub. When I did a lockright in the back of my '73, it had the same part number as the one for my '87 so you don't need to swap side gears. For the pinion flange, Cruiser Outfitters has many to choose from. Should be able to find what you need to make it work.

I think the coarse spline axles are pre '69...

The 60 is not geared with 3.73s, they are 3.70s.

The '73 thirds are not a straight swap, the pinion spline is a coarse thread. For the FJ60 the pinion splines are fine thread, so you can't swap the flanges. Coarse spline pinions were carried up through '77. '78 was the only year with fine spline pinions and 4.11 gears, after that it was fine spline pinions and 3.7 gears (repeat 3.7, 3.7, 3.7).

If you're looking for a straight swap of your 3.7 thirds you need to source a pair of FJ62 diffs. These will have the 4.11 gears and a flange to match your driveshaft flange pattern.

Yep, but I thought the 60 had slightly differnet pinion flanges than a 62 (not positive if ti was the tcase flange or the pinion flange).

There is one other possibility that you can do tho. There are round coarse splined pinion flanges. These can be redrilled for whatever pattern you desire.
I believe that Kurt at Cruiser outfitters carries them.

Actually, considering it is a '73 it is yes for the side gears. For the pinion shaft see the rest of my post.

That is correct

On the diffs, the pinion flange is the same (have one of each sitting on the bench right now) if you are talking the 60 with the transmission spacer. For the earlier (was it 9/85?) the flange is different between the 60 and 62.

The later 60's = the 62's. I'm not sure when/if during the FJ60 run there was a transition to the pinion flange size. I think there was. I have on hand driveshaft flanges from an '81 and '84 FJ60's and diffs from an '86 FJ60 so I could do a comparison. My memory, from just taking an eyeball measurement, tells me that the '81 flange is smaller than the '86. I should put a ruler to it and make sure. I'm running FJ62 diffs in both my 9/85 and 3/86 FJ60's and they dropped right in and bolted right up with no changes being needed.

I have an 81 fj60....same driveshaft flanges as the late 40s.

i have an 85 third in my truck and the pinion flange was larger than that of my 84 third.

after the split date in 85 the 60/62's are the same prior to that the 60 is smaller.

Couple of links to answer the questions:
Cruiser Outfitters

AND

Cruiser Outfitters

Basically, there isn't a pattern we can't come up with regarless of fine or course spline pinions. :D

Ive got a flange from kurt to run a course spline diff in my 62, if you need it shoot me a PM, its just collecting dust.

Look at all the education you can get around here!

I ended up using 62 thirds for mine when I did the swap, because that is what I asked for. I just learned about the 40 thirds because they (wont slam the company here) shipped me the wrong parts the first time around (again).

glad i found this post... i have been wondering about this for awhile. seems like easiest way to swap my 83 fj60 would be a 62 third?

not sure if i read this right...
