I have not found a definite answer in searching.Should I use a gasket on each side of the riser.(to manifold/to carb).Or just one side or neither?Should I use sealant goop? Also is the crack in the bottom of my intake going to give me problems or do they look like that from the mold? Thanks for any answers

That crack would be a problem, it would likely allow exhaust to be sucked back into the engine. Likely your heat riser is stuck in the open position causing it to overheat and crack. I think you can buy a block off plate for the heat riser. Search it here, the heat riser problem causing this crack are very common from my reading.

Should have been more clear,I am running a header now,so will a simple plate on the bottom of the intake solve any leak problems. Also any info on using gaskets or not would be mucho appreciated.:)

I had a much wider crack in mine and took it to an automotive machine shop and had it TIG welded which is the best way to correct this problem. It did not cost that much for 15 minutes of his time.
A gasket goes on both sides of the carburetor insulator. You can get them from SOR.

Crack in manifold

I had a similar crack. It went all the way through too! After chasing my tail for 8 months finally found that crack and had it welded. Put everything back together with NO gaskets or gunk (per Jim C) and my pig runs better than the day I bought it. Since you are running headers once you fix it you should be good. Apparently the stock exhaust causes the IM to crack. No heat shield will be required!!! Let me know if you have any questions. I have had so much help from all of you I am glad to actually be able to help someone else!

If you decide you want the gaskets, let me know. I bought them on a hasty buy from SOR and they just sit.....Jim C told me several times that none were required so that is what I did. I will send you the ones I have if you really want them.

Questions answered

Thank you for the offer to send the gaskets,I think I will just make a couple, and weld up the crack.Just rebuilt the carb,so time for assembly and I'll see if this bitch will fire up.Couldn't do it without MUD.Thanks:)

I've been told no gaskets on either side as well. That style riser acts as the gasket. Mine was cracked and welded by PO. I too no have a header and got the SS block off plate fron $OR just for extra insurance.

Unless I'm mistaken Toyota used a Plenum gasket and a Base gasket with the Carburetor Insulator from 1957 to 1987. I really question the sealing capacity of a bare carburetor insulator versus the gaskets which are far more compliant. To each his own. I use both gaskets. Your photo is the carburator insulator not the riser which is between the intake and exhaust manifolds.

You can find photos of this at SOR.

Yeah... I have those two gaskets for where the carb sits on the sheild and the sheild sits on the Intake...... I also have the one that sits between the intake manifold and the stock exhaust, it came with my remflex intake gasket and I do not need that either since I am running headers. So if anyone needs one of those give me a holla...
