I concur with coolerman - look at the part number on the JTO site and you'll see that it matches up with the part numbers from painless wiring (PWP10107).

Before buying, be sure to do a search on ih8mud and look at the threads concerning "painless" wiring harness. They are anything but painless.

Wiring Harness help

Thanks Coolerman, I think so to. They are not open yet and I will call them back later to check. I had installed a Painless system and had a lot of it bundled under the dash until I could finish the body work and paint. Then I was going to take it to a professional to match up the wires to the Toyota wires/plugs.

Welding in th eroll cage last weekend we had a spark ignite the paper and that bundle (inluding the new fuse block) all burned/melted. So I'm back to starting over again.

I'd love to find a used OEM harness. My old one is in rough shape.

I highly recommend this kit after installing one in my landcruiser.... You don't have to deal with extra wires off the fuse block.

I still need to take some pictures of it finished.... I still have several open circuits on the fuse block.

1. I don't think there is any harness out there I would call "painless." I used a Centex. Still a lot of work. There is just no easy way to rewire a truck. It's the nature of the job.

2. I would not only suggest doing a search on the Painless harness, but also a search on JTO.

X2 - I installed this harness on my '76 w/350, winch, etc. Would recommed a few mods, but all i all a great kit.

Which Centex did you buy? And why Centex over the others?

I bought the GV-16. I bought it because at the time (3 years ago) it was getting good reviews, and the cost was acceptable (currently $260). It has more circuits than I need, but that is OK. I think I tried to buy a GV-10, but it was no longer offered. I also looked at the harnesses from Painless and Ron Francis.

In reality installation wasn't too bad. Mating the generic harness to the FJ40/FJ62 stuff was a challenge but nothing a little study didn't resolve. This harness was set up for street rods and GM columns. I suspect this is true with most of the harnesses out there,

Just snapped a quick picture of the current status of my fuse block... I cut a few wires short, its on my list of things to finish after I get the transmission and tcase back in this weekend.

Right now the only things needing power are the headlights, turn signals, brake lights, running lights, ignition system, gauges, and winch control. I have plans to wire up the horn and get some windshield wipers on the truck again, that will still leave me with plenty of open spots.

I have the EZ harness. Love the names these companies use... EZ and Painless :D
Anyway, did you do any waterproofing of your glove box? I'm looking at mounting my block there also and wasn't sure what all had to be buttoned up. The hood hinge I know. Anything else I should worry about?

I left the glove box as it is, haven't had any water issues there yet. Its sat in the rain with and without the bikini top.

When using painless wiring, do you get new connectors? Or do you have to use the connectors from your original harness?

Joe

Depends on how you want to do it. If you want to use all of the factory switches and lights, then you will want to use the original connectors. If you are using standard toggle switches, and LED lights you can do away with most of the factory connectors.

It doesn't matter which wiring kit you use, as every kit out there for us is based on generic GM wiring. All of the kits have the same wiring problems when used on a FJ40, as Toyota wires some things such as turn signals differently.

Thanks, nothing wrong with my harness, other then being 34 years old. I read on one post here that newer wiring would improve how everything works from brighter lights to better charging system.

There's a vendor on the site that replicates knobs and switches. He can even customize them. They really look great and the price is more than reasonable. Sorry, I don't remember the vendor's name off hand. Just search for custom knobs and you'll find it.
