I was considering swapping an H55 into my FJ45. I really don't want to spend the $450 Man-A-Fre wants for the ebrake conversion. I have a 60 series rear axle from a 60 I am parting out. Could I get the rear drums with ebrake to fit on a FJ40 axle? I know I could try an find a later 40 with the ebrake but I was hoping to work with the parts that I have.

I don't want to go with eldorado calipers and chevy disks, ect because at that point I would just pony up for the t-case ebrake.

you can use 60 series brakes on a 40 but you have to have the late model housing with the 4 bolt flange not the eairly 6 bolt flange.

what about running Cadillac rear disc-brake calipers on your 40 housing?
they come with parking brakes...

in the long run cheaper to pay MAF..............hate the price though:frown:

Domsmith went with the MAF. Check his h55 thread. I ponied up also, but am still in assembly. My $.02 was to go that route.

Buy a post 1990 70 series rear disk brake axle. Get a FF at the same time.

x2 or a hard to find bj40, bj42 or late model fj40 series rear axle but ofcourse i don't think you get rear disc brake

70 series axle sounds like a great axle swap!

Looks like it will be cheaper to pay what they want.

Hugh. I looked through your build thread. Looks good!

Thanks. Been delayed with usual life junk and am enroute to OZ Land this weekend for a couple weeks. Should get it finished after that.

This may be able to be made to work, and at $195, the price is much better!

All Pro Offroad

I also have the MAF e-brake behind the h55...here is a pic of it....

Hey,
I did the SOR kit onto my split case, it really is cheaper and easier than all the other methods. The concept of a disc brake as a parking brake is a less than optimal solution. The disc brake is really a swept area brake, with superior cooling properties, drum brakes have a much larger area to apply braking effort to the friction area. This is why a lot of the 4 wheel disc brake car parking brakes are mini drums inside of the disc surface.
