Have any of you guys seen a 76 FJ40 with a center diff and full time 4WD?

never seen one but I have actaully heard of one, and yes it was stock, but I recall it being a later model.

but is there a chance what you are seeing or asking about is a 76fj40 with no front manual locking hubs, instead of a locking hub there is a driveplate(fixed hub) on the front, so you have nothing to turn and just pull the lever(or some had vacuume shift) in the cab? But this was not full time 4x4 like a 80/100 series.

4 or 5 years ago someone wrote to Toyota Trails the TLC club magazine and asked if anyone had seen one of these before. He had one and cound not find any information about it. I think that he was told that it was not original. His reason for asking was he did not want to cut it up if it was rare. I tried to E-mail him but never got a response. I have the other one.

Toyota did make a "few" I know Joe Turpin had one at his place. I dont know the specs on it but you could try him to get more info.

Would a hub conversion off of a modern toyota truck work? Seeing that the aisin hubs are a direct swap to a FJ40 axle, maybe the automatic hubs off of a toyota truck would net the same thing ???

I think the one I am thinking of was mentioned by Rob Mullen a few years back, up in BC I think....................thinking to much :D

I'll dig into my archives and see what I find.

Subject: Full-time 4WD FJ40!

Recently there was a thread on a rare FJ40 with full-time four wheel
drive, and the consensus of the list was that no such thing ever
existed, and that the Cruiser in question was probably modified. Well,
in a Toyota Trails-related conversation this morning, I stumbled (and I
mean stumbled!) onto ANOTHER one of these Cruisers! Apparently, the
story behind this is that in the mid-70's Toyota was experimenting with
it's own version of the Quadratrac system (available in some of the big
Jeep wagons), and a few of the prototypes tested in the United States
eventually trickled into private ownership. One of these is a '76 FJ40
currently being used as a prototype vehicle by one of our new
advertisers (name withheld to prevent them from being swamped with calls
from curious Cruiserheads), and according to our contact, it has the
t-case lever on the opposite side, the t-case lever is labeled
"4WDHI-4WDLO-LOCK" and everything is Toyota. Look for a feature article
on this rare beast in an upcoming issue of Toyota Trails!

The vehicle is a prototype made by Toyota for the purpose of testing the "Quadratrac" style of transfer case and full time four wheel drive. The tranfer case lever is marked "H-N-L" From top to bottom. The transfer case does have a cable opperated diff lock unlike the Jeep which uses an electric actuator.. The cable pull knob is located on the opposite side as compared to a normal 76 FJ40 tranfer case lever. Also it has different lenghth drive shafts as compared to a standard 76. The yokes on the drive shaft use standard 76 LC u-joints and were made to fit a quadratrac style case.

Anyone want to see some pictures?

heck ya I wanna see pics! can I assume the one you have is the same one Henry and other talked about, came from JTO?

very cool!

No it is not! I have had this one for about six years. I drove by a house one day and asked if it was for sale and he said yes. It may only have 4000 miles on the vehicle. When I bought it it still had the original Dulop bias ply tires on the wheels. Also we noticed there were no rock chips in the front of the vehicle.

We need some pic bro. BTW, about a year ago when i was looking through ebay for fj40s, i stumbled upon a olive brown fj40, don't remember year, anyway the title said full time 4 wheel drive and the guy said it was really rare.

Whats up, badass, you want FT4WD? are you too lazy to get out and twist the hub knob and shift the lever? Probably so, typical of modern day children

He was lying to you. Most(all?) 40s came to the U.S. with drive flanges which were changed out for locking hubs.
