There are threads like this: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=32286&highlight=latch about making your own kind of LATCH system, but does anyone know if the OEM LATCH parts from 01+ are easily retrofitted to the 98 through 00 100s?

Can you even obtain just the LATCH stuff?

For those wondering, LATCH is child car seat attachment points.

Well, they're just anchor points in the 2nd row seats & anchor points in the cargo area. Since the older LCs also have D-rings in the cargo area, you would just need the 2nd row of seats for your LC. I think you only need the double seat also; the single seat does not have LATCH support, if memory serves me.

But as the 100s in 2001+ came WITH OEM LATCH system, shouldn't these parts be available? The cargo hooks are too far spread for a centered seat in the 2nd row.

Are you saying that the whole SEAT itself is different in design due to LATCH?

On my 04 4Runner the LATCH system is just the seat belt itself. We used it a couple of times for the grandkids. If I remember correctly you pull the seat belt all the way out and then when it retracks it will not pull back out until it goes all the way back in. This way you pull the seat belt as hard as you can to get the child seat in tight. They is no special anchors in the back. I would guess that you might be able to just change seat belts from a newer model and get what you need. Maybe we can meet Scott and I can show you when you get the shackles. If you find out if you can do this Scott post up the price since I might want to install them in my 2000 I just bought.

That is not the LATCH system, that has been standard on rear seats in most cars for a decade or more. The LATCH has some small "anchors" that are usually not visible, in the crease between the seat bottom and seat back. All vehicles manufactured after 9/2002 are required to have LATCH, so you probably have them, check your owners manual for more details.

The seat portion is, I think. aside from the actual LATCH anchors, there is a leather flap which covers them when not in use, which my other seats did not have.

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but I am also looking to about retrofitting the LATCH system on my 2000.

Can someone post pics of how the latch mounts are installed on the double seat?

I can get pictures tomorrow, but all it looks like Toyota did is drill a hole through the body, but a washer/brace plate thingy on under side (like chassis under side) run a good size bolt through the hole and attach loop thingy on the interior side.

I can get pics of both an 00' and 01' to compare if you need them.

I'd also be interested in retrofitting my '98. The seatbelt just doesn't get as secure a hold on the child seat, particularly in the center of the middle-row of seats. Pictures would be cool.

Says who?

Here are pictures from the 2001 with Latch

These pictures from underneath are of the area roughly over the pumpkin on the rear axle

Belated thanks, pman. I haven't been here in a while.

I am a fairly new father, so forgive the ignorance. The above photos are just a part of the LATCH system, right? What I'm more interested in is the mounting points in between the seat cracks, by the seat belts. They can be seen here:

LATCH and Top Tether Information for Child Safety Seat Restraints

I'm wondering if this can be retrofitted in. It would make my life a bit easier. I wrestle with the seat belt and that little H metal piece every time I reinstall the seat.

So i looked at the seats, there are little steel loops on the seats for securing the cart seat as you mentioned. I havent really done a thorough comparison between the '01 and '00, but so far it looks like the only option would be to actually swap the second row seats.

I just purchased a 100 as a transport for my 2 infants. I've done a bit of research into this. Unless you have an 03 or newer you will not get the LATCH or IsoFix points in the crack of the seat. As far as I know there is no way to retrofit a vehicle with them. I spoke with TLC in California about mounting Rear Tethers in an 80 series which would be much simpler than installing LATCH. They didn't want the liability, not when dealing with babies.

You're cheapest fix might be to get another car seat and leave it more permanently in your 100.

Just to clarify the terms for car seats:

-LATCH or IsoFix: the 2 points in the crack of the seat. Essentially does the same as a seat belt but is easier.

-Rear Tethers: 1 point behind the 2nd row that straps to the floor or back of seat. This is used when car seat is Forward facing and keeps the top of the car seat stable and thus minimizes the childs neck from moving as much in an accident.

-Front Tethers: Seems like cars are just starting to put these in. Same as the rear tether but for use when seat is rear facing.
