On a 2001 TLC,

Can anyone tell me which Transmission cooler line is the return line, at the point where it connects to the radiator: Driver or passenger side? Edited PS, returns via the oil cooler first then to transmission.

Also, will the line draw in fliud with the engine running when the line is disconected and placed in a can of ATF fluid? Edited NO

Edited 11/9/16:
Transmission fluid is pumped into lower DS metal nipple going into bottom of radiator. Comes out metal nipple on PS of lower radiator connected by rubber hose going to lower nipple at PS of upper radiator next to over flow tank, then on to oil cooler in front of radiator via metal tube. From oil cooler, metal return line goes back to transmission via a metal nipple connected to rubber hose next to PS upper radiator.

Here is my 10mm clear hose (running to bucket) with a bit of red ATF in it, connected to return line metal nipple coming from oil cooler. This is next to coolant overflow tank.

Not sure on the 4 speed tranny but usually the pressure line coming from the tranny will go to the finned oil cooler then out of the cooler into the radiator and then out of the raditor back to the return on the tranny.
No the tranny won't suck oil back into itself, you need to pour it in.

Rear of the tranny is the outlet IIRC, just incase you don't have the finned cooler, it will go just into the radiator and out again.

THX 100TD

I look and that would make the return line on the driver side.

So i should disconnect the return line at the radiator and connect a line to the radiator at that point and into a drain bucket.

Then pour AFT into the dipstick tube while running the engine.

Have i got this right?

Do i need to plug the loose end of the return line or can i just let it hang lose?

I replaced ATF in following way:
1. Remove AT pan plug and drain old ATF, then replace plug and fill in same as drained amount of fresh ATF through AT dipstic pipe and small funnel.
2. Disconnect upper hose from radiator and direct it to a big can (it's helpful to extend hose with clear hose).
3. Run engine for 20sec. That will drain out about 2qrt. of old ATF.
4. Fill in about same amount of fresh ATF through dipstic pipe.
5. Repeat step 3 & 4 until see fresh fluid drains out.
6. Reconnect upper hose and check ATF level with dipstic.
7. Run truck about 5miles to warm up ATF, then check level with dipstic and add ATF if needed - DO NOT OVERFILL !

I used 14qrt of Amsoil Universal ATF to replace + 1qrt to add for correct level.
It is as easy as engine oil change. (A couple beers will help:beer:)

Why Drain the pan first?

To prevent pump from running dry you have to keep some ATF in the pan. There is no reason to add fresh ATF to remains of old dirty ATF. So better get rid of as much dirt as possible from beginning!:D

How do you like the Amsoil?
I was thinking of use Mobil 1

Is light beer ok to clean out the old pipes:doh::beer:;)

IMHO Amsoil is as good for AT as light beer for old pipes :D

P.S. Be extremely carefull with drain plug: pan thread is too soft.

Thanks for the help it worked great, the only thing i forgot was the beer:beer:

PS it was the top transmission cooler line next to the upper passager side of the radiator.

Ok. Good. What ATF did you use - Amsoil or Mobil1?
How AT works now, any notisiable changes?

Mobil 1
Transmission feels smother, runs cooler and reduced the virbration of the hi-low shifter.

Power steering pump sounds and feels better too.
:bounce::bounce2::cheers:

X2 on this!!! And FYI the drain plug gasket is smaller diameter than any other drain plugs on this vehicle. I am in the process of adding/replacing with Amsoil...so far so good.

Greetings, and sorry for hijacking the thread... I was in the Anza Borrego Desert this week (SoCAL) and punched a hole in what I beleive is the transmission cooler (small radiator in front of the main radiator).

I am looking for a new one, but don't want to get raped by the local dealer. Any tips?

Thanks for the flush tip above - will definitely do that while replacing the cooler.

I also bent the antenna in half (I was letting a 4 year old steer, and I wasn't very Johnny-on-the-spot with the brakes...brushed up against a tree...we were only moving about 5 mph ).

Take the radiator to radiator repair shop if your lucky it will be repairable. I don't know if there are any third markets for them, ask at the Dealer parts counter if they know of any. Also used thruogh a junk yard parts locator, just have it serviced at the shop before installing it.
If all else fails try to get a 20% discount at Toyota.
here is one more idea: http://www.trademotion.com/partloca...e=34&model=Land cruiser&year=2000&catalogid=1

The anntenna mast is easy to replace ~$42.00:
