We're shooting for mid-January to open up registration for CM2012.

And the next question is where to camp? A couple of the runs are overnighters. The rates for the Slickrock campground seem pretty decent, if I end up bringing kids I will probably end up most nights there, they love the pools and hot tubs.

planning on going for the first time this year, what site to go for registration?

I am planning on making the trip out there year for the first time. I have a few questions for the masses. I will going as cheap as I can get I plan on tent camping and bringing coolers with food and beer. Where are some good spots to tent at with room for truck and trailer, is it usally pretty cold at night? Do you have to register for the trails right away or is it a sign up when you get there like BHCC? Thanks for the help and can't wait to get there.

Very cool. You'll love Cruise Moab! To your questions:

There are a number of options for camping away from Slickrock - too many to list. But here are a few you can research.

- camping in the Sand Flats area above Moab. Most are fee sites as I recall, and you have easy access to popular trails like Fins, Hells, Porcupine Rim

- BLM camping down toward the Kane Creek trail head. Several dispursed sites as you descend toward Kane Creek trail head and Hurrah Pass

- Up Onion Creek there are some dispursed camping options

- Area BFE, where CM 2010 was held, has many camping options as well as places to wheel

Temperatures in downtown Moab don't get too cold - probably 40's or low 50's on average. If you get out of town it's usually a few degrees colder. Area BFE is at 6000 feet and can drop into the 30's on average that time of year.

For trails, you will select your top 3 choices for each day when you register for the event. The trail bosses for the event will then work their magic and assign you trails based on availability of leaders and balancing of numbers. You'll get an email closer to the event that lets you know what trails you are assigned to.

HTH. You'll have a blast for sure.

I would still suggest camping at Slickrock...'as cheap as you can get' is great until you realize all the going's on are occurring at Slickrock.

I chose to camp away from the group at one event last year, and regretted it. Half the fun of these events is the social side, and spending your evening counting your beer consumption so you can safely drive is a buzzkill :)

Thanks for the info. I will be staying at slickrock to be around the group, that is half the fun meeting people and talking cruisers. Thanks for the trail info. I belive I have them figured out but didn't know you needed to list your firts three choices.

I was hoping to see registration open by now. I looked back and found I registered on 16th in 2010 and 10th last year. I'm just a little concerned about missing out on my favorite trail.

Good things come to those who wait eh?

Honestly, most events announce the date of registration months before making for a more fair registration process. Those of us with iPhones and constant Internet access have a bit of an unfair advantage to those who use the computers at the library. Just sayin'

Tried to post in the rising sun forum but could not. Has or does anybody tent camp in the elec and water hook up sites? It would be nice to have power to run a compressor and tools if needed. I would hate to be the only guy in a tent next to 30,000 dollar camper.

There is a lot of work done on rigs in the campground but of course not after hours. I don't recall ever seeing tents in the RV sites but that may be only by choice, not a rule. I think when you register the campground program will only allow tents in certain sites. But don't count on my memory.

I had my OzTent in a powered site a few years ago...cash is cash :)

Tools/wrenching IS allowed in this camp...one of the reasons it is chosen as a base...many other campgrounds in Moab frown on rebuilding transfer cases under the cottonwoods :)

Anybody from Rising Sun gonna chime in here and give us a clue as to when reg may open? It would sure be welcome!
