I'm still looking at an '86 BJ74, just over 100,000 miles. I'm attaching photos that I am told show the inside of the rear fenders. What do you think of the visible rust?

I am trying to decide if I should get a flight to see this thing.

No opinions? Does the rust look normal for an '86?

I'll offer one. I wouldn't be comfortable with it. I haven't seen it all, but that looks about average, and like others have said, it's a never ending battle. Bondo and body fillers might be fine, IF the puss was removed and IF the remaining steel is protected, but from the looks of it, that didn't happen here.

I'm not sure you can define "normal" for a 25+ year old vehicle. That's a long time for people to tinker with a vehicle. I understand it's difficult to judge a vehicle purchase based on photographs. But, I think that if you go in to the purchase with an open mind and realize that no matter how many photos you see the vehicle will need some maintenance you will be ok. With the wife's BJ71 purchase we had the opportunity to not only inspect it, but drive it in person. It drove and looked great, but I still accepted the fact that there will be hidden maintenance that we will have to deal with. To me that's just the price of owning one of these rare vehicles! Just my .02 cents, I hope that helps some!

My prior experience with old cars is with MG's: lots of rust but in a lower price bracket. I guess it's the combination of that amount of money, buying sight unseen and still getting an old car.

This particular BJ74 was sold to someone else tonight.

Thanks for your input everybody.

Although the 70 Series is still rare in the U.S., more and more are starting to show up both here and on Ebay so I would just be patient and continue to look for the best one your budget will allow. Importing one is always an option.
Good luck ......

Have you been able to see and drive a 70 series truck yet? You probably should see and touch a few, it would help a lot to have some reference.

Here's a solution. When I find my 77, and one for Charles, I'll get his 74, and you can get my 70.

Fly into Tallahassee and I'll hand you the keys for a test drive.
