Fellow Mudders,

I purchased a 1970 FJ (VIN FJ4085625) 3 speed and am working on rebuilding the original 1F engine. The block is currently at my machine shop, otherwise I would provide the number on the block.

Can someone provide guidance on the main bearing cap orientation for caps 2 & 3? Caps 2 & 3 have arrows (see photo below prior to tear down) that are oriented towards the rear of the engine. I would think the arrows should face forward.

Is this typical or did the PO install them incorrectly (assuming he worked on the engine)?

Thanks

1. If it is at the machine shop, it will be disassembled.
2. Once disassembled, you can put the caps on the block sans bearings and FEEL for yourself which orientation is correct.
3. The arrow WAS an indicator when the motor was new; now it is just an assumption.
4. I learned this the hard way, outthinking one of my previous machine shops.

Best

Mark
