Today i spent some quality time under my cruiser changing the fluid in both diffs and the t-case and i noticed a few things. It always would leak a drop of oil a night but while under there i pinpointed where the leak was coming from. (1st photo) Is this the rear main seal? (hopefully not) or just the very rear section of the pan gasket? The second photo is of a mystery wire that is disconnected on one end. the two hoses it is running through are from the rear heater. Where should it be connected to and what does it operate?

The fluid in the rear diff was pretty clear, but the front was way darker in color and had some nasty foamy sludge drip (ooze) out at the end. i was thinking the seals to the knuckles may be going and the gear oil mixed w/ grease but the knuckles arent leaking so maybe the front diff was just never changed.

If anyone can identify where that leak in photo 1 is and what the wire in photo 2 is, i would be very grateful.. thanks guys

Your rear main could be leaking, but to see it you must remove the tranny, clutch and flywheel. More likely, it the rear part of the pan. You could try to gently tighten the oil pan bolts, but don't be suprised if you need to replace the oil pan gasket.

Try removing the flywheel cover. If the oil is slinging off the rear main and flywheel, the back of the flywheel will be oily and streaked. Otherwise it's just the pan gasket, which is messy to replace, but not too hard.

The gasket that shows in the picture is the oil pan gasket, can't tell where it is leaking from. Remove the inspection cover and see how far up the oil smear goes.

The wire goes to the lock bolt on the idler shaft of the transfer case. It is just a ground.

Just change the front dif oil, it probably has not been done in awhile. Check to make sure the breather hose is still there. It sounds like you have some moisture in there, could just be that it has not been changed in a long time.

Good luck.

I don't think you can see the rear main seal wihtout removing the flywheel. That gasket is probably part of the oil pan gasket.

I have a ground wire that goes to my transfer case. It attaches to the hold down screw for the idle shaft retainer.

That is the oil pan gasket. Mine has been leaking for a while too even though the engine is a month old. I tried to tighten them but didn't work. I'm hoping that by getting a new pan and gasket will solve the problem. Good luck.

same here...when the leak gets larger, i tighten the bolts but it won't completely go away until i replace the gasket...i've had a new one for about a year now...it looks great hanging from some hooks on the wall. one of these days, i'll replace the seal

don't know much about 62's...don't their pan gaskets leak? if so, why not?

I read up thread about clutches, flywheels and inspection covers... and after I wrote "fellas" I included ya as a reflex. That's all.
Carry on...

Hahahahahah....

ok, everyone in this thread, who knew that subject vehicle was a 62 or who's post had no bearing on whether said vehicle was in fact a 62, or not, is hereby indemnified from said shortsighted comment.

Also, anyone who hereby takes exception to the word "fellas", especially by intelligent 8 y/o boys, shall also receive redress.

That oil leak is prolly from oil pan gaset.
I have 3F carb motor FJ62 which uses same long block with 3FE.
Mine also leaked like yours.

damn.... i just did an oil change and spent lots of $$ on M1 syn, but i guess i can wait a few thousand miles since its only a small leak.. still much cheaper (timewise) than replacing the main seal.

thanks everyone for the quick response.

to those who identified the wire, should i plug it back in? wheres the idler shaft bolt ? (i'll check the fsm) my 4wd works, as well as the indicator light so it must not be anything major on the t case.

My 62 had the identical leak, exact same spot...pan gasket....messy but easy fix. When trying to remove the pan, use a wood block and bottle jack against the frame. Just apply some pressure and leave it for a few hours. Trying to whack or man-handle it off is futile. learned this trick from orange 45....works like a charm.

Good luck

As long as your changing the pan gasket you might as well get all the numbers you need to get your crank bearings. On mine there is a noise thats sounds like a lifter, but since I had problems back in the seventies with a F engine I decided to change the rod bearings at 100K. Went to the local Toyota dealer and found out that there different ones. You need the numbers or letters (I foget which it is) to get the right bearings. At 100K the old bearings measured out as brand specs. Also use the Toyota gasket sealer on the gasket. Makes it alot easier to make sure the front and back of the gasket stays in place while you install it.

See below photo.
This is my t-case which is located behind of tranny.
The shaft in red circle is idler shaft and the bolt in blue circle is idler shaft retainer and bolt.
