The time has come to sell my dream cruiser to get a "family car". I was allowed to build and play with this cruiser until it was family time. I've always wanted to put together a diesel cruiser and this one does not disappoint; This thing is a beast. I did the swap myself but this was the third engine swap I have done and have worked as a mechanic. I took my time to make sure everything was done right.
Quick details:
1996 FZJ80, low mileage 6.2 Military spec diesel, 700r4 heavy duty diesel transmission, 3x locked.
20-21 MPG and I would say that it feels to have a little more power than stock 4.5. Definitely more torque. 248,xxx miles on the body. Black exterior/ grey interior. No rust at all. Body is in very good shape.
More details:
Military Spec 6.2 diesel engine. Low mileage. This engine came from a company that test the engines before selling. They can have anywhere from 500 miles to 50,000. I think this one is very low mileage. It does not smoke at all. Completely mechanical. Glow plug button is in the cab so you can heat the plugs as long or as short as you want. I replaced the oil pump before installing just for piece of mind. A turbo from a 6.5 can easily be added for those who want more power.
700r4 heavy duty diesel transmission. Overdrive wired up to the OEM button.
Mark’s 4wd adapter 700r4 to stock transfer case. This adapter also works for 4L60 transmissions which opens the door for vortec swaps which would be pretty easy at this point. Motor mounts are the same.
Serpentine belt setup upgrade
New Radiator and new high flow water pump
Front and Rear OEM lockers
Front axle rebuild with new discs and pads
Sound deadening on floor and sides
Blue sea fuse box in the rear with added power outlet
Blue sea fuse block under the hood
Dual 1000 CCA batteries
12,000 lb winch with synthetic line.
CB mounted in the center console and firestik antenna. Front speaker near the glove box is wired to the CB.
Inside spare tire mount
New Power steering pump and 130 amp alternator.
New steering stabilizer
2 ½ lift TJM springs. Heavies in front, mediums in rear.
285/74/16 Mickey Thompson's with about 50% tread
OME caster correction
Scion touch screen stereo with Bluetooth and navigation capability
All new sony speakers in the doors
Rear subwoofer and 200 watt amp
New LSPV
Hydraboost brakes. Uses pressure from power steering pump instead of vacuum to power brakes. Big improvement.
On board air system with 2.5 gallon tank, two air connections (front and rear) and interior pressure gauge.
Tahoe center console with real cupholders
Cloth heated seats from non-US FZJ80. (Seats have not been wired up yet but it should need only switches.)
Aux engine cooling fan
Heavy duty remote plate style engine oil cooler.
Modified front grill to allow more air flow
Custom made front skid plate
What’s left to be finished:
Needs a Dakota digital Tachometer interface for the tach to work. Simple to do if you must have tach.
The heated seats need to wired up and switches added.
The bad:
Small engine oil leak at the front of the oil pan.
Small tranny fluid leak where the Marks adapter connects to the transmission. Apparently I’m not the only one who has had this happen with a Mark’s adapter.
Dent in the rear tail gate.
Dents where the rear spoiler was.
The title has been changed to reflect the diesel engine so that inspections are no longer required here. Anyone outside of Georgia should checked to make sure the title will stay the same after transferring. I don't know why it wouldn't but thought I'd put out a disclaimer.
I'm posting it here first to allow mud members a chance. Mud price $10,500. I have way more than that in it as any one who has done a swap will tell you. I will be putting it on craigslist and ebay for more.
