I usually like to muddle posts up with text, but I think in this case I'll just let pictures speak for themselves.

Thanks for those pics. Nice break from reality for a bit. Nice piggy too

Bluejohn eh? The canyon where Ralston cut his arm off? What were temps like in the canyons? Looks tempting, and I am just a 4 hour drive away...

We went down the main fork of Blue John and exited the west fork. Ralston cut off his arm on the way to Horseshoe canyons, which I've never done (long day, I think something like 16 miles round trip?) since I've only gone canyoneering during the winter (not enough day light and I had two people who had never been before). Temperatures were 30 during the day (10 at night) and about the same in canyons.

Three canyons I'd recommend for beginners (if you have a strong outdoor/climbing background): Blue John, Bull Pasture, (middle) Middle fork of Robber's Roost. I also would go when the weather is warmer. :) Edit: Also, I've only ever used Michael Kelsey's guidebook, which IMHO is dangerous and potentially misleading.

Nice pics. It's good to see Royal's 55 out being used like he used it. I spent many long hours at his place working on my 40 and his 55. Bring back memories.

Many of his newer books have a disclaimer, saying something to the tune of "WARNING, don't blame me" :D:D:D The guy can move!

Great pics Brian, good seeing you again. Take care!

He's an intriguing character!: http://www.backpacker.com/article/0,2646,824,00.html

You'll probably get a call from me in a few weeks looking for parts. Thanks again Kurt!

Great read

I picked up one of his books 6-7 years ago on a local peak climb (Timpanogos), mostly because of the historical info he includes. As much as I hate his 3rd person perspective, funny spelling and metric use... he does do some great research and documentation. I now have a half dozen of his books.

cool. I would get way too claustrophobic for some of those shoots. Caving is something else i just can't do.

Off-topic, but is Royal out of Cruisers now? When I had my first 55 about 6 years ago I was having engine trouble and he offered to give me one for free and help me swap it in! Cool cruiser guy.

Royal's the man. I haven't talked to him for a while, but he purchased a FZJ80 which he's lightly homebuilt. Others will have a better idea though.

Looks like some arm chopping fun, what a beautiful place(don't forget the dull swiss army knife)!!!!! Canyon on!!!!!Canyoneers

I pack a nice masonary hammer just for such occasions, ;) but thankfully haven't had to use it.

Thanks for the comments.

That's probably a better tool to have  (in case of rock collapse) good idea. I'de much rather chop the rock than the limbs!!!!! haven't been climbing since I was really young, someday would like to refresh my skills!! Keep on rockin!!

his wife drives a Royal style modified FZJ80 that is great. That is about it, he is a lurker and is still active with our club, luckily. He was a dig inspiration for me with his 55 once he started swapping to diesels...
