congrats Dex and welcome to Mud ... looks like you found a decent 40 ... they all need work and ongoing maintenance, after all the newest (in NA anyway) is over 30 years old ... you have a good plan i.e. fixing and the ability to use it ... they're made to drive ... good luck
after completing the 1st 40, and the time/work you put into it, the 2nd must be a piece of cake ... your boys will remember your efforts forever ... your 40 with the soft top brings back memories ... I drove my Jeep CJ all year round, for yrs, with a soft top and soft doors but its warmer here...
like others have said, its worth something especially if the frame is okay and it runs ... maybe $250-350 ... plenty have bought a 40 for a lot more $ that appears good and ended up stripping it down to the frame cuz of hidden rust etc ... you'd be basically starting with a frame and axles ...
welcome to Mud ... your 40 holds its age well ... love the patina on the hood ... plenty of threads here re fixing that rear sill ... can be fixed with a 2x2 square steel tube and will never rot out again ... can weld in a piece to fix the rust above the sill ... but, you have the right idea...
hmmm, I've had my truck since new and have never used the rear window washer ... have used the wiper to clear snow or dust but never the washer ... will have to check it out ...
wow, sweet ride, and great b'ground (something special) ... love the patina (except the rear sill) ... here its patina for one day and holes next day ...
did the POR15 thing on my 40 ... have heard good things about RustBullet ... I religously do the maintenance thing every yr i.e. wire brush and touchup with POR15 on the FJC and the 40 ... it has paid off ...
just saw this thread ... great build ... always nice to see an artist at work ... that frame looks better than it did at the Toyota factory ...
I don't even whisper salt/brine around my 40 ... there is nothing that will stop it from seeping into the seams, nooks, etc. Easy to say park it when you have a need for yours, but that is the only solution ...
on the other hand, I religously spray my 9yr old FJC underneath every year with...
I agree with having it thoroughly checked out before writing the frame off per se ... if you have to, and are up to the task (work and financially), do a frame off ... the benefit is you'll have a rebuilt 40, the downside is time/cost ... a faster alternative is find a truck with a good...
