    craigslist 2003 LX 470 with 62k miles

Thanks for posting. I was planning to take a look at it, but suspected that it might be more like what you found than what you (or we) were hoping for.

    Towing Impression

Towing with my '99 seemed alright. Better than expected, really. My comparison was an FJ60 - terrible, and an FJ Cruiser - still not good.

What oil and filter do you have and how often do you change

I was doing Mobil 1, a Toyota filter, and yearly changes because mileage was rarey more than about 5k per year.

Headlight help? Are expensive Halogens worth it? Better alternative?

HIR bulbs are better. Not as much of a difference as doing a good HID conversion, but significantly better than stock.

Timing Belt Failed and Took Out Engine

Alright, back with updates. It's not as bad as it could be, but it's not good. Robbie put a borescope in and the pistons looked good. So next step was to do a partial timing belt change and a compression test. And that's where things turn not so good. Driver's side cylinder #1 has low...

    Rear Seat Tether Anchor

LATCH isn't any more secure than installation with a seatbelt. In some cases it's a bit easier to install, but when properly installed, they're both effective. I wouldn't buy a new one just for that.

Colorado 4x4 shops (toy-crawlers in broomfield)

How big a lift? The PO of my truck had slee put on 866s and a diff drop wasn't installed either.

    .

Only if the seller is paying for the diagnosis. Don't spend your money paying to have problems diagnosed on a truck that belongs to somebody else. The PPI did its job and turned up the problems. At this point, the seller either needs to get the diagnosis done, or give you a pretty large...

    Tire opinions

When I got them, and this was about to years ago so things may have changed, the Nittos were less expensive than BFGs. The Coopers were actually my first choice, but were even more expensive than the other two.

    Tire opinions

I'm in something of a minority, and haven't had great luck with BFGs. Performance was fine, but lifespan was not. I don't think either set I had lasted much more than 20k miles or so. Most recently I've been running Nitto Terragrapplers, and those have had similar performance and are wearing better.

looking for torsion bars for a lift

I have OME torsion bars, springs, and shocks with no extra weight. It's firm, but fine for the most part. It does ride better with a few extra people or a bunch of weight in it though.

    Timing Belt Questions

$750 is lower than I've been hearing for this area. Does that include water pump? Mine is waiting for parts to come in, but should be done later this week. Total with water pump is around $1k.

driving on asphalt with center diff lock engaged

Per Slee, no viscous coupler - Slee Off-Road 100 Series Newbie Guide "Unlike the 80 series, the transfer case does not have a viscous coupler."

driving on asphalt with center diff lock engaged

Not quite. The center diff lock forces the front and rear drive shafts to turn at the same rate, but the rear wheels are still on an open diff and can turn at different rates, same with the front. The rear locker forces the rear wheels to turn at the same rate, and the front locker forces those...

    New Exhaust, quiet or growl.

This is interesting. Mine had the Borla installed when I bought it, so I've never really heard the stock one. For anyone that's considering it, the Borla really is pretty mild. No droning at all that I've ever noticed. I wouldn't mind a bit more growl if it could be done without droning.

Timing Belt Failed and Took Out Engine

Thanks again for all the suggestions everyone. I'm going to review with Robbie, but it does sound like replacing the timing belt may be a good place to start here. Normally I would consider tackling this on my own as it sounds doable. But I'm already short on time with a new job, trying to...

Timing Belt Failed and Took Out Engine

Okay, updates. Talking to the shop it's at now: * They recommended engine vs head for a couple reasons. One, they didn't want to go tearing into the current engine and then discover it needs more than just a head. Two, they said they don't tend to trust used heads because they've usually come...
