Make sure he does it right. Somebody stuck a later top on my 74 and I've got rust up the nose because of it. Holes left unplugged, etc. I'm sure your guy will know better, but you'll be doing some drilling.
Yeah, you need to yank the head. Be glad you're learning how to do head work on this particular motor, as it isn't very complicated.
Does that tapping noise change in tandem with the RPM?
I didn't read through the lines and realize that disc was the question everyone had. Thought maybe you guys wanted a specific year. Sorry for being thick.
Sorry guys, I missed these replies. I'll shoot you guys some PMs.
I don't know exactly what year it is out of. I bought it for my 74, and it matches up perfectly with that. It was a drum axle, and I removed the drums in a plan to convert it to disc.
I had planned to rebuild, paint, etc, and...
I've got a rear axle out of an FJ40 that has been in my barn for about 10 years, and I'm moving so I need to get rid of it. I'd like to get $75 for it, but I'm open. I'll get some pictures loaded today.

Atomic EFI
Dakota Digital Dash (can't recommend this enough)
Top and doors painted
35" tires
It still needs about one of everything, but considering...
I know you posted about it quite a while ago, but would you post up some pictures of how you mounted your rear seat? I'm getting ready to throw mine in, and I'd love some ideas.
Hey guys, just got done installing and interfacing the Atomic EFI, and Dakota Digital HDX. It is slightly too dark to take any decent pictures, but I'll get some in the morning and post them up here. Just wanted to give a few thoughts on both of these units incase anyone is thinking of them...
That is easy to do with a compression tester. Just throw air pressure into the cylinder, and it holds up just fine. No biggie.
OP, sounds like before you throw more money replacing seals, etc, you need to take it someplace and actually have them diagnose it. For the cost of those valve seals...
