I finally managed to get this video uploaded on my ca. 1998 internet connection. It's a full disclosure, all the warts video walk through of the 40. It's not perfect, just really damn clean and good where it counts to properly enjoy it. Let me know if there are any questions or if anyone would...
I need to raise some quick cash for my business, and this is sort of the nuclear option... I'm trading my 40 down for something less expensive and putting the cash delta into the company.
1974 (11/73) FJ40. Unrestored, unmolested, pretty damn complete. If you've ever had to deal with someone...
In situ:
An attempt to illustrate the fact that it's nothing more than a stack of rubber discs:
The first one was like that within 3 miles. It's not at all unlikely that things have changed in the past 8 years. Suppliers for certain parts/materials can change pretty easily.
Is anyone aware of an accelerator pump boot that isn't crap? I rebuilt my carb a while back with a Warner kit, and the accelerator pump boot lasted approximately... 3 miles (literally).
I decided that brand was to be avoided and ordered a Keystar kit and used a few pieces out of it. That...
I'm running with them for now, but they'll be replaced when I get around to giving this one the "treatment". If someone wants them sooner, let me know. I can have the seats done independent of the rest of the truck. The Karmann Ghia gets brought to DD first, then I have to finish the restoration...
I'm an old hand around old cars (this '74 is the newest car I own at the moment by over a decade), but new to Land Cruisers. I got this truck a few months back, and it's pretty thoroughly original and complete. The seats were wrong (I thought), but pretty clean aside from that. I figured they...
I keep track of my mileage on all of my cars (my LC is my newest both by acquisition and build date) to get ahead of any issues that might crop up. When I first got it up and running I got 11 mpg mixed. After a wideband tune I'm getting a solid 14. I still have a gas leak at the tank to locate...
Engine and mechanicals first is the consensus, but I'll offer a slightly different rationale. If you do body and paint first, you're going to be fighting the body work to avoid marring the paint. You can always tell a car that was restored out of order because there is all this pretty paint with...
Pic from when I first picked mine up:

Left of cluster: headlights
Right of cluster:
Top row: brake light, choke, hazard, cigarette lighter, plug
Bottom row: plug, wiper/washer, heater fan, fresh air pull, heater pull

Adjust your valves and see what happens. Stems can (and do) stretch, and if it gets bad enough (ie if they've never been adjusted in the 41K... or 141K miles) it can affect compression adversely. Your compression gauge can be suspect as well. I had one go bad that gave me readings like that, but...
Only true of a bad job. Really crappy jobs will just pour the coating over the crap inside the tank, and won't get very good coverage. This will slow the release of crap to your filter until a big flap of coating comes off like a bad sunburn... Then you're flooded with crap.
The proper way...
No, they are not exactly interchangeable. Front and rear cylinders are different. Front brakes do a majority of your braking, thus the front cylinders are stronger than the rears. The difference is in the bore size.
If your rear brakes are more powerful than your fronts, your back end will...
