Hey have you thought about water injection. I run it in my truck and love it. It out cools any intercooler. And when you won't extra power add some methanol to the mix. I've been running it for a few years now and the truck runs a lot cooler even with it turned of as it as cleaned all the crap...
The hilux will respond well to the meth water my 1KZT did. With a 3 GPH nozzle made 26 hp on at the wheels and a lot of torque only on 10% methanol rest water Now I'm running 13 GPH nozzle. It's one of the best bang for buck mods you can do. I'm surprised a lot more people don't do it
I have over 340,000 km on my KZJ71 1KZTE. Brought it with 80,000 km. I service it every 5000km with a diesel and oil flush keeps the oil clean for the first 1200 km. I got the oil analyzed at 5 thousand km still perfect and then at ten thousand still fine to use he saidk
Hey was just a thought could you run it strait into your exhaust, near the turbo .So it comes out of your engine and never goes back into it, it shouldn't be enough oil to make it smoke. I've seen it on petrols. But never on diesels

Id go with the timing as i had the same problem with my truck recently , and the timing was way out now its starts great just a wee puff of black smoke
