    This is what the water pump looked like when I removed it. Assuming that the opening doesn't crumble when I clean it. I'll take everyone's advice and reinstall the water pump and move forward. Thanks for all the replies.

    I have a 78 2F in my 1965 FJ40. I removed the water pump and saw this behind it. It looks pretty badly corroded, but I'm not a judge to know if this is something that will prevent the engine from ever working (it ran when I got it). I can break the engine down some more and see what's inside...
