This can happen after restoring battery power. It takes some time for the ECU to gather real world data and adjust to actual conditions, which I'm guessing includes such things as temperature, gas octane, knock sensor input, spark, fuel mixture, MAF sensor input, O2 sensor input, and so on...
Congrats on the purchase of your 94! I have one as well, terrific vehicle.
After taking ownership of used vehicle (esp. with high miles), it's the right time to baseline all fluids, regardless of what prior owner records claim.
Diagnosing a drive train noise is a second reason to...
Doug, thanks very much for that additional info. Prior to reading your post, I had wondered if it's OK to exceed the 3/4 full recommendation to try to solve the problem. Good to know it's OK to do so and the extra grease will just come out the sweep seals.
As an update, I thoroughly cleaned...
Excellent. Even if one needs to remove the outer hub nut, there is no need to reset the preload. Just re-torque the outer hub nut to 47 ft-lbs or whatever the proper spec is.
Question about fabricating the special tool. Is the zerk hole threaded, or is it straight drilled and the zerk...
Owner's manual specifies Moly grease for the steering knuckles.
Specifies regular (non-Moly) grease for the wheel bearings and propeller shafts.
If possible, I'd prefer to use the same grease all around.
Is it OK to use Moly grease in the wheel bearings and propeller shafts?
Plan to use...
Beowulf,
This special spindle greasing tool is a great idea.
I need to fabricate one to solve a problem with my vehicle.
I don't yet have experience disassembling a front hub.
Please let me know which front hub parts need to be removed prior to using the tool.
My best guess is...
SilBlades work better than anything I've tried.

96r50, good point. Thanks for clarifying that!
Dbarr4lsu, base line all your fluids as described in this thread. Changing each fluid is as easy as changing the engine oil.
Start by greasing the steering knuckles via the square inpection/fill bolt on the inner top -- 1.5 tubes of Moly...
Lucke,
You have a broken electrical wire, or a disconnected electrical connector.
The automatic tranmission wires are in the loom that goes from the back of the engine compartment to the top of the automatic transmission.
Find the broken wire or the disconnected connector.
On the...
Lucke,
Your vehicle's problem is in the electrical wiring. It's not a mechanical problem per se.
Check continuity of the wiring harness from the engine comparment to the automatic transmission.
Your vehicle's automatic transmission is not getting the electrical signal to automatically...
Based on observations stated above, I suspect breather tubes are plugged.
I think this could create a vacuum, enough to suck grease from wheel bearings, past the seal, into the front differential.
Today I plan to clean the breather tubes and modify the tube's end cap by removing the flap...
Does the 1993 model year have some advantages over the 1994-97?
If you had a selection of used 80 series to pick from, one from each model year, all with equal mileage and excellent condition, which model year would you pick?
Easy stuff first, here's what I've done so far to try to fix the 'moan' noise after a right hand turn:
- changed power steering fluid to Red Line D4ATF synthetic using the FAQ method.
- changed front diff and transfer case fluid to Red Line 75W/90 synthetic gear oil.
- greased steering...
The suggestion to replace the OEM fill plugs with Camry 10mm allen head plugs is excellent.
My rear differential fill plug looks like it's rusted in place.
Unfortunately, I rounded the bolt head yesterday.
Soaked it in PB Blaster and will try again today.
This may help remove rounded...
