Some other things to check. Since it's 5 and 2, I want to guess it's coil pack wiring related though.
Shorted/rubbed wires to the 5 - 2 coil pack
fuel pressure
Pcv valve
Valve clearance
Power and ground for the ECM

The slip on rotor would be able to move with the tire removed. Lift up with tire on and check for bearing looseness. Also, rotate everything by hand while off the ground and try and isolate the noise.

You should know that while this manual covers most everything having to do with a 96, it's for a 2002 model year and several things...
Not difficult at all. Just need to make sure not to score the camshafts, usually pretty easy to remove with a flat screwdriver punched through the middle of the seal.
Note seal depth before removal.

With your mileage it's probably worth your while to replace everything. both idlers, the tensioner the seals, pump etc etc etc.
Don't want to have to open it up again for something like that. Should be good again for at least another 165,000 miles. :)
