How bout an update? What did you end up doing? I just got mine back from the muffler shop. My dual mufflers are located outside the rail right under my front seats and out between the tire and leaf springs and out behind the rear of the vehicle. I don't rock crawl so no worried about have rocks...

I spoke to the Bilstein rep today 1/29/24 and he said that in the rear, the shaft should go in the bottom position due to rocks denting the housing. In the front, orientation doesn't matter.
I would personally recommend having the exhaust come out behind the rear wheels as much as possible. My rig has the exhaust coming out right under my front seats and the fumes are terrible! I desperately need to have the exhaust re-routed to the rear. I too have an auxiliary 22 gallon gas tank...
I'm rebuilding my gauge cluster to my 72 FJ40 and am looking for the vinyl stickers for the gas, amps, temp & oil level. I saw a similar thread, just can't find it. TIA
Finally got to install my Auxbeam controller to my Tuffy box console. Now to route the wire out of sight and connect everything to it. Sorry for the crappy pic, yes my phone is as good as a potato. 72 FJ40.
